Description
Charming home at the end of a country road on the Kinderhook Creek surrounded by fields and woods with hiking/biking trails and a very private swimming hole! HVAC and a cozy fireplace make this a comfortable year-round getaway and a wonderful place to enjoy the fall colors! Within easy drive of endless things to do and places to explore such as the quaint town of Chatham (5 min), Tanglewood (35 min), antiquing in Hudson (20 min) and good skiing too (Catamount 30 min, Butternut 45 min)! The space This mid-century home in Chatham features wonderful period details such as a sunken living room built around a massive stone fireplace (yes, it works!), central HVAC, built-in vacuum, state-of-the (then) art St. Charles kitchen, huge stone patio with built-in outdoor kitchen, and tiered garden behind the house. Built by a young Italian immigrant-turned-U.S. Army lieutenant for his beloved young wife after his return from WWII, the home and its details were planned down to the last minutiae by the young officer as a way to keep up his spirit and remind him of home while fighting his way foxhole-to-foxhole during the fierce and bloody Italian Campaign. While sadly, some of these features such as the built-in vacuum and built-in blender in the kitchen are obsolete and non-functioning, and much of the outdoor stonework has settled over time such that the outdoor kitchen is no longer usable, it is still fun to find details that attest to the home as the manifestation of the American Dream by that hopeful and war-weary young soldier (check out the brass outlet in the middle of the stone floor of the living room so there could be a lamp in the middle of the room without the need for an unsightly extension cord). While the builder and his lovely wife never had children and therefor no need for a second bedroom, I renovated the home to create a second bedroom out of the once-even-more-grand living room for my two daughters. Guest access Guests have the entire house to themselves and over 40 acres of fields and woods with trails along the Kinderhook Creek to explore and enjoy. There is even a secluded, private swimming hole with a picnic table.
