Conveniently located in the centre of Blakeney (complete with village shop, church, fish and chip shop, pub, post office, and a lovely playground), Arch Cottage is just a stone’s throw from the ancient Forest of Dean so you’re spoilt for choice for things to see and do. Visit Beechenhurst for a walk around the famous forest Sculpture Trail, a cycle along the bike trails, scale up the Go Ape! climbing tower or enjoy a relaxing afternoon tea at the famous Speech House hotel. Lots of cycle hire options in the forest - with trails for all abilities including challenging downhill MTB routes. (Electric bike options if you’re less practiced on the hills!) The cottage has a solid fitted rack for your own bikes. (Pls bring locks.) Step back into forest history at the Dean Heritage Centre, Clearwell Caves, Littledean Jail or Hopewell Colliery. For architecture, choose from St Briavels Castle, beautiful Tintern Abbey, statuesque Chepstow Castle or the magnificent Gloucester Cathedral. Other attractions include Dean Forest and Perrygrove steam railways (which have themed events/teas all year round), mysterious Puzzlewood, exciting Go Ape! and also the scenic Lydney Harbour - with a great little cafe. The Forest is often the location for TV and film productions (eg. Sex Education and Star Wars), so follow a filming trail and search out where JRR Tolkien and JK Rowling found inspiration. Enjoy a picnic and a paddle by Blakeney Straits stream in Wenchford, take a stroll or paddle around scenic Mallards Pike lake or picturesque Cannop Ponds. The Wye Valley (great for canoeing in the Wye), Gloucester (with its beautiful cathedral), South Wales beaches and the ancient city of Bath are all within an hour’s drive. Local maps and walking books are in the cottage. There’s a wide range of eateries to choose from (including Gloucestershire foodie favourite The Barn fish restaurant at Severn and Wye Smokery).
