And in the nearby Zabłocie (post-industrial district of Krakow) you can see modern art collections at MOCAK. Fantastic surroundings, not yet fully discovered by tourists, offer plenty of local attractions. Podgórze is connected with Kazimierz (the Jewish quarter) by the Bernatka footbridge. This unique footbridge across the Vistula river is suspended in a location where a bridge once stood and provides easy access across what used to be the border into the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Paper House Studio is located at the most beautiful markets in Krakow, Podgórski Square with centrally located neogothic St. Joseph church. The present market square was laid out at the foot of Lasoty Hill as a central square of Podgórze district. The location of the market was not coincidental, as it was at an intersection of important mediaeval routes, leading to Wieliczka (salt route), Kraków (through the Vistula in the area of today's Staromostowa Street) and towards Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. In order to create an optical illusion of a vaster area, the market square was given the shape of a trapezoid, narrowing towards the church. The oldest part of the Podgórze Market Square is a compacted frontage of houses on its north-western verge. The classicist building of an old inn called Pod Czarnym Orłem ("under black eagle) (no. 13) is particularly worth of attention with its so-called Polish-style monitor roof and an image of an eagle in a triangular tympanum. In mid-19th century, when the town's economy improved, a new seat of the town hall was raised in the form of a vast historicist edifice with a richly decorated façade and a stately assembly hall (no. 1).] Presiding over the heart of historic Podgórze on the south side of the district's main square, this unmissable neo-gothic juggernaut was built between 1905-09 on the design of Jan Sas-Zubrzycki. Dominated by an 80 metre clock tower, elaborate masonry dressing, gargoyles and sculptures of saints, St. Joseph's slender, yet imposing brick facade rates among the most beautiful in Kraków and is gorgeously illuminated at night. Standing before the rocky outcroppings of Krzemionki, the area surrounding the church has been turned into a small landscape park and sculpture garden featuring several benches and seating areas, an outdoor play area for young children, and the 1832 belfry - all that remains of the original temple, dismantled due to design flaws.
