Other things to note If you're interested in tourism, you've chosen the best city! The first thing would be to visit our Plaza Mayor and enjoy the color of its stone, which varies according to the brightness of the sun. On Calle del Prior, see the Renaissance Palace of Monterrey (owned by the Duke of Alba) and the Church of the Purísima, where the largest mural of the Virgin is located, painted by José Ribera. Next, stroll along Calle de la Compañía, which owes its name to the fact that in the 17th century, the Jesuits were located there, (being the scene of many medieval films) and a route for tourists and students. There you can also admire the Church of San Benito (look in its low relief for the figure of the thorn), the Pontifical University, the Clergy, the Casa de las Conchas (which until recently was the private property of the Junta de Andalucía.) Continuing along Calle Libreros (where the Ruta de la Plata used to pass), we arrive at the University (on its façade, try to find the famous "frog" that, according to tradition, will bring good luck to whoever finds it.) Behind the statue of Fray Luis de León is the Patio de las Escuelas Mayores, and going out to the right is the Casa Rectoral de Unamúno. Calderón de la Barca Street leads to the Cathedrals: in the New Cathedral, also look for the astronaut in the bas-relief, and from the tower of the Old Cathedral, be sure to go up to the New Cathedral to see "IERÓNIMUS". In front of the Old Cathedral is the municipal museum, from where Francisco Franco led the Civil War in his day. Going down Tentenecio Street, we will observe on the left side the Civil War Archive, and then the entrance to the Museum of the House of Lís (ART NOUVEAU and ART DÉCO Museum.) Following the route, we can see the Torre del Gallo of the Old Cathedral in the background, and on the right, the Huerto de Calisto y Melibea, (described in the work of "La Celestina", by Fernándo de Rojas.) Further down, we will find the Cueva de Salamanca, where according to tradition, the devil taught classes.......and if we continue going down, we arrive at Calle de San Pablo, where we are surprised by the Convent of San Esteban (occupied by the Dominican fathers) where Columbus presented his project to travel to America to Fray Diego de Deza, favorite of Queen Isabella the Catholic. Next to it is the Convento de las Dueñas, and a little further back, the Colegio de Calatrava, founded by the Military Order of Calatrava. If you continue down to the river, you can visit the Automobile Museum, and in front of it, the Cruz de los Caídos (Cross of the Fallen), where those condemned in the Middle Ages were executed. We'll also find the beautiful Roman Bridge, the figure of the Headless Bull and the statue of Lazarillo de Tormes. All these monuments are illuminated at night and offer a very different image of Salamanca that you can't miss. In the Plaza Mayor is the tourist office, where you can get information and all kinds of brochures. However, upon your arrival, we'll give you a map of the city and a brief summary of the city's gastronomic and leisure offerings. During check-in, we will present you with a mini-guide of, in our opinion, the best and best-known restaurants and tapas bars (quality/price) that you can go to.
