Beneath the Sanctuary of Kaviri is the cave where the hero Philoctetes lived for 12 years, when the Achaeans abandoned him in the expedition to Troy, because he was bitten by a snake. Volcanism was the largest city of Lemnos for 22 centuries. From the excavations came to the surface great archaeological finds. The Volcano Theatre reopened in 2010, after 2,500 years.
