The whole area is popular with surfers as it’s cheap to stay here and the breaks are never crowded. But apart from surfing, the area doesn’t have wide appeal; the beaches can be pretty thin and there’s no real concentration of places that appeal to travellers. Note that the water covers lots of rocks, coral and other hazards. Also, besides a few guesthouses offering battered boards for rent, there are no places selling surf gear or offering repairs – you’ll have to go to Hikkaduwa. One worthwhile stop on this stretch of coast is the Sea Turtle Farm & Hatchery (admission Rs 150; 7am-7pm), midway between the 128km and 129km posts, where you can see baby turtles that are ready for release into the ocean here.
