The space “Homestay on Rekawa Beach. Just very lovely hosts” Reviewed yesterday NEW When I arrived at the hostel I found that the owner was very friendly. He showed me how to walk to the beach from the guesthouse and where the turtles were. The owner of the guesthouse (name is Kandu) has a job as a fisherman. On the very first night I even got the chance to go fishing with the old man! It was absolutely fabulous. If you want to get there, ask the tuk-tuk drivers to take you to Kandu's place. Everyone knows him. Though many tuk-tuk drivers say the place may not exist, it does. The reason why they won't may not take you there is because they get probably more commission at the more expensive cabana's/resorts. This is definitely the cheapest place where you can stay (I've been shopping around to find a place to stay that fit my budget).The guesthouse is located on a 3-minute-walk from the beach, a 5-minute-walk from the turtle-spotting sight. Nearby there is a lagoon, which is quite scenic at sunset. The owner's wife cooks 3 meals a day, and you can join them whenever you like (for a small contribution of course, though they don't ask you to). You would be stupid if you wouldn't. I absolutely loved the food, and every day there's fresh fish! The rooms are very basic but clean. Same counts for the bathroom. To get there is about Rs. 150, happy bargaining with the tuk-tuk drivers! Our Turtle Watch is nowadays a community-run project (by NFR; Nature Friends of Rekawa) and is dedicated to providing a safe and secure nesting environment on one of Sri Lanka's most important turtle beaches. The project employs previous turtle egg-poachers as 'nest protectors' who monitor the beach 24-hours a day to ensure all nests are safe from both natural and human predators. Providing "in situ" nest protection is the most effective form of turtle nest conservation, and will help ensure these wonderful creatures are protected for future generations. What to expect during a Turtle Watch? We will be waiting at our visitor centre (or on the beach) until a turtle is spotted by one of our nest protectors, who are patrolling the beach. They will sign our guide & volunteers. They will take you to the beach in groups of maximum 10 people. Our project asks a donation of 1000 Rs. per person (500 Rs. for children). 100% of the proceeds goes to our conservation activities and and the local community.
