It is on King Dutugamunu's (one of the greatest rulers of the island, 161-137BC) historical trail from Ridi Vihara (Silver Temple) to Ruwanwelisaya in Anuradhapura. This stupa which houses Lord Buddha's sacred relics is one of the world's tallest ancient monuments (338 ft in height and 951 ft in circumference). The silver needed for the famous Ruwanwelisaya was taken through the land where the Kuda Oya Retreat stands today.
