Description
Our C17th stone barn home with self-contained guest wing & tree house, is set in woodland high up, with stunning views of the Brecon Beacons. We are close to Pen y Fan, the spectacular 4-waterfall walk & many others, caves, and a popular area for cyclists, with Bike Park Wales & Zip World Tower nearby. Dogs welcome, (2 max). Ideal for small families. (Please read the notes below thoroughly). Maximum group size is 4 plus babies. Because the main living spaces are not large enough for more. The space This is off-grid living with mod cons, such as 30MB/sec streaming wifi broadband and a Sky TV. We have our lofty twin-bed tree house, additional car parking, and - for those who love walking, perhaps with their dogs – there are plenty of superb walks on the hills and in the valleys, including some directly from our property. We generate our own electricity via solar PV/battery-bank and micro-wind turbine, hot water via solar thermal, and a biomass boiler and Rayburn, the latter fuelled from our own sustainably-managed woodland. There is a 13m long south-facing private patio down the length of the guest wing with its own lawn, rockery and privacy, and Gas-barbecue provided. The lawn can be for camping as well as the tree house close by (for children perhaps?) both with their own toilet adjacent. No strangers share the accommodation with you; it's just you – even if you only need 1 bedroom, , with us living the other 2 sides of the west-facing courtyard. The base price is fixed and is for the whole wing incl. the treehouse. The only additional cost is in the winter season based on the additional biomass heating costs following three Ukraine war. The have reluctantly decided after over 7 years, of hosting that the maximum number of guests that we can accommodate satisfactorily is 4 (plus babies) and that is if even if you are using the treehouse or not; getting more than 4 to eat together around one table is unrealistic and, despite explaining this to potential guests, some have complained about this in their reviews nevertheless. The treehouse is an add-on for the intrepid (in winter especially!) since it is unheated and uninsulated. Please do not try to negotiate or haggle with us on this subject; we have made this decision very carefully. We charge an additional £10/night heating tariff from 15th October – 15th April, which should be paid to us on arrival to cover the 300% increase in mid 2022 for biomass pellets. Bought as little more than a pile of stones in 2005, we (Sandy & Stephen Waldron) finally moved into these C17th barns in 2014, after years of self-building. We have our own recently restored ancient lime kiln in our woodland, along with the original stone quarry adjacent. There is a gas-fired barbecue you may use on your own private, south-facing patio. Free to use – if you clean it upon leaving; £10 charge if we have to! The treehouse had its own two ring + hob camping-gas stove, mini-fridge and basic implements etc. There is access to an outdoor wc and washbasin, but to shower or bath you need to enter the guest wing. The wifi does not reach there. There is a rope bridge from the treehouse to another tree. We seem to be popular with cyclists. We are close to BikePark Wales, possibly the best mountain cycling course in Europe, just outside Merthyr Tydfil) about 20 minutes away by car. The country roads here are ideal for cyclists with little traffic and great climbs! The well-known Dragon Ride mass cycling event-annually goes through our village in June. We also have a lockable shipping container for bikes, although everything here is very safe. We have never had anyone trespassing on our land or any attempted break in, although we are very secure anyway. Local farmers keep a close look-out for anything unusual in a village like ours! The biggest attraction locally is the ‘4 waterfalls trail’; our village has many waterfalls not just this particular trail. Another major reason people stay with us is our proximity to Pen Y Fan - the tallest of the Brecon Beacons. Most people who stay with us climb it. The kitchen/snug is quite compact but en-suite there is a solarium type of dining/lounge area opening out onto the patio and lawn. The kitchen has a small free-standing induction oven large enough for a chicken, say. . It also has two gas hobs , a small fridge, and a microwave. We allow you to use our washing machine/drier for a fee; £5/wash. Since there is no freezer section, you may use our chest freezer. The heating system produces hot baths and showers but as normal the thermal store easily drains if guests have long or multiple showers or bath. The water is not heated instantaneously. The water is really hot but only safely so. Guest access Essentially you have a self-contained wing within our home, with your own key and front door. There is fencing and small gates which isolate your external land to keep dogs in and ours out! We live across the central courtyard and you have a locked sound-proof door between us and you. Your space is all yours. There are three steps up into your space and two down, so full wheelchair access is not possible. The tree house has two single beds, lighting, power, two desks and a platform with a cooking area, off which there is a rope bridge across to a platform from which in 2023 we plan to install a 42m long zip wire run! It hangs high over the valley although the access side is just a shirt stepped ladder up. Other things to note If you want your privacy that is fine. Just tap on the door to our bit if you need us or have questions! We do NOT provide breakfast or other meals. This is a self-catering AirBNB. We try to ensure that there are basics, such as sugar, tea/coffee, salt, milk, oil etc for you on arrival. We grow vegetates in our polytunnel, so do ask us what is available. If you want an iron and ironing board just ask. There is none in the wing. We have our own washing machine and dryer, each of which can be used for a fee of £5 We also provide a modern travel-cot and a high chair. Children 2 years old and under are not charged under AirBNB rules. We welcome up to 2 dogs, but insist that they don't sleep on the beds or go on the settee as this has caused trouble for the next visitors (smell, hairs etc). If you are worried about settees please bring sheets or blankets to put over them. This does not apply to beds. People who abuse this will not be welcomed back and if they are damaged we will charge you for full replacement. Pen Y Fan and the other Beacons, the waterfalls and caves, and other magnificent walks can be accessed, as well as our several acres of woodland, with breathtaking views of most of the Beacons. It is a 15 minute walk to the village pub (The New Inn) on a very old footpath directly opposite the beginning of our track. Currently (August 2024) the pub is closed and looking for new owners. From 15th October to 15th April we charge a small heating supplement of £10/night. Camping space or parking for camper vans is offered to our guests giving more fun and sleeping space. There is a separate charge for this if required. Because there is not enough room around the internal table for more than 4 campus will need to find other space inside or outside to eat. There is an external table and chairs on the patio.
