Description

The Villa Magda is an old artists house with magical, uninterrupted views over the sea below - views uninterrupted by other houses (of which there are none), by people or by cars. As one AirBnb guest said - "there are no words." The villa sits on the hillside over the Cala and offers a tranquil little slice of paradise for visitors who want beauty, quiet and time and space for reflection, happiness and love. The house is a home so it is what you would expect- loved and cared-for and lived in. The space The Villa is a two bed-roomed traditional villa sitting on the bluffs overlooking the ocean just above the famous Cala de Deya. It has been a home and artist’s studio for over fifty years where artists and writers have found their inspiration with nothing to disturb them - no cars, no people and no pollution to detract from your watching the waves roll in across the sea. It is insta brought to life! Many of the books in the library are associated with visitors who have either stayed here or simply sat on the verandah sharing wine, conversation and song as the sun has set over the sea below. The house has retained its artistic heritage with present owner and long-time Deia resident, Oona who eschews Ikea for an idiosyncratic slowly collected style in keeping with its previous resident, the American surrealist artist Annie Truxell, some of whose paintings still adorn the walls. This is a house imbued with culture: a piano, an extensive library of books and paintings. We hope you will feel that staying here will not only make you feel connected to each other, but also to the landscape around you and the culture which is our shared and fragile inheritance. The house is located far off the road down a winding and somewhat unkempt farm lane which wends past old olive groves and orange tree orchards. The villa is at the end of the track. Beyond is only the hill gently tumbling down the sea below. From the house to the Cala is a ten minute walk down a small walking track and the main village of Deia is a twenty minute walk. There is parking by the house. The house has two double bedrooms. The master bedroom has a king sized bed with large shuttered windows that open onto a view of the sea. The second smaller bedroom has a large double with doors that open onto the side terrace. The bathroom has a shower and bath. (There is also a separate WC in one of the out-houses and also an outside shower for washing off sea-salt). The kitchen opens onto both public rooms. One contains a breakfast dining table with floor to ceiling doors opening onto a shaded terrace with dining table and gas top stove. This room also has a small desk for writing your novel, a stove to keep you warm and a daybed for those moments when you need to lie back and find the perfect metaphor. The other public room contains sofa and reading chair, a wall of books and upright piano (and TV with DVD collection). We are also eco-friendly and have invested in a bio-recycling plumbing system. All water from showers, toilets and sinks are used to irrigate the garden. For that reason, NO PAPER IN THE TOILETS, A BIN IS PROVIDED TO PUT THIS IN. The system and the bacteria does not work with this. We are also SOLAR POWERED, this means that if you want to do a laundry or a dishwasher cycle the best times are middle of the day while the sun is shining, try running your machines during these times and save energy. Outside there are sun chairs and tables in various little garden hideaways designed to allow each occupant to find their own little space of peace and tranquillity. Although, we have chosen to make our house a simple and down to earth experience, we have not completely ignored the small creature comforts like dishwasher, wifi broadband, satellite TV, washing-machine. This is not a glitzy holiday house with swimming pools and cocktail bars and plunge pools: it is a little piece of heaven looking out only on the ever-changing sea light where you can sit or lie without the sound of cars driving past and for a few days… just feel at peace! And when you do rouse yourself to send your insta picture and friends ask you, “is it really like that?” You can answer, “yes, really. I am in heaven!” Guest access There is no off limits to the house. Well, there is a storage room at the side of the house but that is kept locked and one side of the very large cupboard in the second guest room has been closed off for laundry purposes. Other things to note Welcome to Villa Magda: Before you arrive: If you are going to shop for food bear in mind that the house is fully equipped with herbs and spices. There is also fresh rosemary and sage growing in the front garden. There is a water filter installed next to the sink so you don't have to buy bottles of water, no more plastic waste! The tap is to the side of the sink on the left. When you come down from the main road to the Son Bujosa path don’t worry, it is not dangerous but it is a good idea to rent a small car if you are not used to bumpy paths and to bear in mind that at the bottom it is difficult to turn around with a large four wheel drive vehicle. Just take it slow and easy, there has never been an accident on this road so don’t worry! PARKING There is only ONE parking place at the bottom of the road as there are four houses and each house has a space so please be aware of this and leave space so that other cars can get down there and can turn around. This only applies to summer visitors as in the winter it is very rarely full. You will probably get to know and see your neighbours since there are only three houses that are being used on a regular basis, so I leave it to you to be sympathetic and attentive guests and neighbours and work it out between you all without rancor! There are outside lights that can be turned on to help you when you are coming home at night. The switch is next to the front door to the left of the piano. Don’t forget to turn them off during the day. There are rubbish boxes at the top of the road, one is to the right off the main road near the kilometer marker 61 and also on the way to Soller by the Cal’abat road on the right. They are tastefully encased in wooden shelters. Also there is a recycling point down to the right where you turn off to go to the Cala Deia by car or just before you reach Deia a right and down next to the school. KITCHEN: The kitchen is fully equipped. I love to cook and there are great cast iron pots, many bowls and just about everything that you will need to make cakes, pies, stews and casseroles. There is also a hand blender, a large blender, whisks, peelers, strainers, rolling pins, graters, garlic press, and just about anything you might need in order to churn out a culinary marvel. The TV: The T.V works, but I have decided to let go of my Movistar channel as no one seems to use it anymore and because of the fabulous fast satellite connection, we can watch anything on the computer and also plug in your computer to the big screen or watch dvd's that are in the shelf there. PERSONAL EFFECTS: I have left most of my personal effects in the house as I feel that this gives it a more homey feeling but I ask you please to exercise your own judgment and if you are coming with children then please make sure that you put anything that you feel would be broken by them out of their reach. I hope you will treat the books with care and put them back when you are finished. They are old and cannot be replaced so look after them. If something gets broken then come clean, tell me and I will attempt to fix it or replace it. I have never felt it necessary to ask for large deposits and try to rely on the trust/good Karma that comes from being in this special place and knowing that my guests appreciate it too, so far I have only been disappointed once! GENERAL The fireplace in the living room is not working, (obvious) but the middle stove works very well and is extremely efficient. There is plenty of firewood and it just needs cleaning out every couple of days. The upstairs bed is accessed by moving the ladder from it's resting place to the left of the kitchen to the middle of the kitchen entrance and using the hooks higher up to attach to the ledge on the edge of the platform. Just make sure that the rubber feet are sitting solidly on the ground. Safe and easy although best not to let tiny people up there without adult supervision. You are welcome to play the piano, but do please treat with respect, don’t put hot or cold drinks on it, don’t smash the keys hard, etc. If you have young children, please keep the keyboard cover down. If they are learning to play, they can practise. Please respect our neighbours and don’t play late at night unless you are an accomplished musician that is! CHECKING IN By 5pm or after. CHECKING OUT By 11 a.m. When you leave please take your garbage and recyclables with you. There are three recycling spots near the house. 1. The road that leads down to the Cala Deia which is next to Sempletada. 2. The road that leads down to the school on the right when entering the town of Deia has a recycling spot. 3. The road that leads down to the bottom part of Deia near to Can Quet, after you leave town and after the Es Moli Hotel.
