The interior has been hand-sculpted and finished by myself alongside international artists. A sweeping spiral staircase, hand-painted bathroom murals, and living plants and trees growing inside the home give every corner a sense of wonder. The 32-foot vaulted ceiling creates a cathedral-like openness that guests never forget. Luxury, off-grid. All furnishings are high quality and beautifully maintained. No expense has been spared to show that sustainable living can be deeply comfortable. That’s the message of Earthship Karuna — off-grid doesn’t mean going back to basics. How it all works. The home runs on a new solar power system with a backup generator (rarely needed). All water comes from a local natural spring, and drinking water is filtered through a nano-filtration system in the kitchen for clean, safe water straight from the tap. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need to cook, plus a fridge freezer to keep your provisions fresh. Work & play. There’s a dedicated office space with a good desk, chair, and fast 30Mbps unlimited Wi-Fi — ideal for remote workers. When it’s time to unwind, connect to the JBL 310 Bluetooth speakers and let the incredible acoustics of the vaulted ceiling do the rest. Just one request — no parties! Outside, a large private garden offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views in the area — perfect for morning coffee or starlit dinners. Dining. Enjoy vegetarian breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Govinda’s Restaurant, set in a beautiful spot beside a waterfall with stunning views. We can also deliver dinner directly to your door, or there’s another vegetarian restaurant a 10-minute walk away. Guest access The entire home and private front gardens are yours exclusively. Beyond your doorstep, you have full access to Karuna Dham — 25 acres of private land with waterfalls, streams, natural pools, and forest trails to explore at your own pace. For the adventurous, the surrounding mountains and forests stretch in every direction, offering endless trekking directly from the property. No transfers, no tour buses — just step outside and walk. Other things to note About Karuna Dham. Earthship Karuna sits within Karuna Dham, a privately managed NGO established 30 years ago, overlooking valleys and mountain ranges. Other guests stay in simple cottages spread across the 25 acres, so there are always friendly staff and neighbours nearby. In 15 years of hosting, we have never had a personal safety issue — solo women, families with children, and solo travellers are all very welcome here. Set your expectations right. This is a blissful nature experience, not a hotel. Embrace the sounds, the pace, and the beauty — that’s what makes it unforgettable. Please note that the property involves steep paths, so it may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility. Getting here. You must arrive via Satish, our trusted jeep driver, from Kodaikanal — the forest department does not permit other vehicles on the final road. If you have your own car, we’ll arrange safe parking with a neighbour about 20 minutes away and Satish will bring you the rest of the way. Latest check-in is 4:30pm, as staff finish at 6pm and the remote location makes late arrivals very difficult. Food & kitchen. The kitchen is fully equipped if you’d like to cook — pots, pans, plates, cutlery, everything you need. However, please bring all your own cooking ingredients and snacks, as we are far from shops. For hygiene reasons, we do not share food items between guests. Meals at Govinda’s Restaurant are available but charged separately — please settle your restaurant bill in cash at checkout. Note that delivered dinners can sometimes arrive after 9pm, so having snacks on​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ House rules. We ask that you respect the peaceful atmosphere of Karuna Dham.
