Columbia River House

Walk out the back door and enjoy the sandy beach within seconds, or stay in and enjoy the view from this historic Victorian on the mouth of the Columbia River. Updated, well-stocked kitchen, roomy dining room, and three cozy bedrooms upstairs. Kid and pet-approved! We are in a small, quiet community; if you are looking for a peaceful, beautiful retreat, this is your place! We have a 27-hr gap and thorough cleaning between guests. The space Sweet 1900-era cottage steps away from the mouth of the Columbia River, in the historic village of Chinook, Washington. Here you may awake to the sound of Bald Eagles calling as they return to their nests, or the lapping of the waves as the tide comes in. The beach access is right next to the house - make your coffee and walk to the beach to enjoy the river and watch ships on their way to Astoria or Portland. The beach is great for kids, as the waves aren't too big and the river water is much warmer than the ocean. The house is on the road into town so you can hear cars when they go by, but the house is centered on the river and feels relatively secluded. House Amenities: The kitchen has basic supplies (oil, flour, sugar, spices), drip coffee maker and coffee, microwave oven, pots and pans, flatware, dishes, etc... We cook a lot when we're here, so it's a functional kitchen. Phone with local service Alexa/Echo for music, etc... Wifi Internet access Upright piano in the living room There is no T.V. in the house. If you want movies, you'll need to bring a laptop, ipad or other viewer. We have "very fast" internet that should accommodate your entertainment or working needs. Bedrooms #1 and #2 have queen beds, bedroom #3 has a double. The living room couch makes out into a queen-sized bed with a built-in inflatable mattress. All bedrooms are upstairs, and the stairway is a narrow spiral. There is a full bathroom upstairs, the bathroom downstairs has a bathtub. Across the river from our house is the bustling, charming little town of Astoria, Oregon, with farmer's markets, music festivals, breweries galore, and plenty of fine dining. Ten minutes west on 101 and you can enjoy the ocean beaches of the Long Beach Peninsula. Some favorite places and activities are: Fishing (salmon, sturgeon, rock fish, bottom fish) - go out on a charter boat or cast from shore. Clam digging Fine dining Beach combing on the ocean beach* Hiking around North Head, Cape Disappointment, Fort Columbia and Leadbetter State Park Go to the Lewis and Clark Museum Play and picnic at Waikiki Beach Bird-watching (everywhere) U-pick blueberries in Long Beach Go-carts and mini-golf in Long Beach Cranberry museum in Long Beach Go to the International Kite Museum, then go fly a kite! * Please be aware, the ocean here has a serious rip tide that can get the better of even experienced swimmers. Adults should not go in past their knees, and children should not go past their ankles and should be watched at all times. The river behind our house does not have this rip tide and is a joy to play in. Guest access Entire house, front and back yard, and parking area. The back yard does not extend past the hedge, so please walk to the right of the hedge and use the driveway to get to the beach. Other things to note For quick coffee and a bite, there’s Chinook Coffee Company just a short walk west. Further on is a small grocery & gas stop. For more substantial shopping, there is a larger IGA in Seaview called "Sids", which is 12 min. from the house. Across the bridge in Astoria there are two options: the Astoria Co-op (15 min away), and Safeway (19 min away). In Warrenton, there is a large Fred Meyer (16 min. away) that has a decent grocery section. There is also a Costco in Warrenton (19 min. away). We usually go to a combination of the Co-op and Fred Meyer's. Go to the Blue Scorcher in Astoria if you want delicious bread and cardamon rolls.
