Description
Quirky self-contained ground floor barn conversion with oak beams in small village of Bassenthwaite by a stream with ducks, walks from the door, only 15 mins to Keswick. 2 mins to Sun Inn pub serving food (booking recommended). Quieter part of the Lakes. View to Skiddaw mountain in the distance (4th highest in Lakes) & skylight window to view the stars, dark night skies! Fibre broadband and smart TV. The space The Nest is a former stable/barn which has been converted into a holiday home and is formed from four ground floor level rooms. It is ideal for walking couples, the elderly who don't "do" stairs and anyone really who just needs a cute little cottage for a holiday. You enter the kitchen and to the left of the kitchen is the separate double bedroom - it's small but has a full sized double bed. To the right of the kitchen is one step to the hallway leading to the shower room and the separate lounge. Switch off in our quiet village, ideal for walking, climbing and sightseeing. Bassenthwaite is only 15 minutes drive from the popular market town of Keswick. The village pub, Sun Inn Bassenthwaite, is only a few minutes stroll along the stream for meals (booking recommended esp weekends and school holidays) and local ales. You can take walks from the door down country lanes including to Bassenthwaite Lake, or for the more adventurous walk to Dash Waterfalls or climb Skiddaw mountain behind us or some of Wainwrights other northern fells. All of the Lake district within easy reach. Situated next to the farmyard of this former sheep farm (most of our farming happens elsewhere in the village), this cottage is in the courtyard next to our farmhouse and 2 other cottages where our free range chickens wander. Guests enjoy feeding our puddle ducks and watching them as they go past The Nest on their way between their shed and the stream, or just relax by the stream with a book or a drink and watch the world go by in the public seating by the stream. See the stars on a clear night. There is plenty to do and many places to eat nearby in this quieter part of the Lake District, avoiding the towns and busier villages in the Lakes if you prefer, eg several nearby village pubs and restaurants, tours at the Lakes Distillery, Bassenthwaite Lake Station with the Orient Express train, the 'locals' town of Cockermouth with many independent shops, the award winning Armathwaite Hall spa, Wainwrights northern fells, the western lakes, the Lake District Wildlife Park, Dodd Wood, Carlisle Castle, Hadrian's Wall, and the Solway coast is only 30 mins away - ideal for dog walking, bird watching or having a picnic. The lakes of Loweswater, Buttermere, Crummock Water, Ennerdale, Grasmere and Rydal, Thirlmere, Ullswater and Windermere are between 25-40 mins drive (depending on traffic), as well as the closer lakes of Bassenthwaite (5 mins) and Keswick/Derwentwater (15 mins). Guest access All of The Nest is yours. Our yard for parking next to the Nest is shared with the owners and two other cottages. Other things to note We allow one dog provided you agree to our 'doggy rules' which are that the dog is clean when entering the cottage and sleeps in a cage or its own bed. The dog is not allowed on the furniture and must not be left in the cottage alone and must get on well with other dogs and be on a lead when in the yard due to the chickens and ducks. If you have any queries about this, please feel free to ask. If you wish to bring a pet other than a dog, please enquire with us before booking. Initial toilet rolls provided. No shop in the village - Many guests order an online shop to be delivered from Tesco, Sainsburys or Asda or click and collect available from Booths in Keswick. In Cockermouth, 15-20 mins drive, there is a Sainsburys, Aldi and Lidl. In Keswick, there is Booths (like Waitrose of the North!) and a medium-sized Co-op. There is a laundry room with washing machines and dryers shared with the other guests for a small additional charge. Check-in between 4 and 10pm. If arriving after 10, please let us know. If checking out on a Sunday, check out time is by noon. Charging of electric vehicles from the cottage is not allowed.
