Description
Holmlea is a cosy, sandstone cottage c. 1840, nestled in a quiet, pretty little road in the friendly village of Freuchie. With light, spacious, high-ceilinged rooms, Holmlea has an arty, vintage style, and is a welcoming, comfortable and relaxing space. There is free parking in the road opposite the cottage, and a large, free car park (25m away). Most of our guests tell us they feel instantly at home on arrival, and many don't want to leave! Licence No. FI 00095 F EPC rating D The space Holmlea has many original features, and we have added a beautiful cream Jotul stove with Delft tiling in the living room, with sweet little insect illustrations. All of the artworks in the cottage are original, as we are an artistic family, and many are available for sale. Outside, although there is not a garden, there is a bench where you can sit out in the sun, and a small back doorstep area where you can also take chairs and a table out. In the bathroom there is a great shower over a bath, and the kitchen is well equipped and has basic supplies of tea, coffee, sugar, oil and condiments, and a few extras. There is antique and up-cycled furniture throughout the cottage, and lots of interesting and useful little touches. This is not your average holiday let! Please note that although the cottage is all on one level, there is one step up at the front door and three at the back. We have designed the cottage to be homely, comfortable, attractive and the sort of place we would love to stay on holiday, and our guests appreciate it, we have many return visits. There is a very comfortable sofa bed in the living room, so we can accommodate 4 guests - suitable for adults or older children. Freuchie is a very friendly community, and there is a local grocery shop five minutes walk away. There is also a 24 hour garage with a good sized shop just outside the village, and the Albert Tavern is also nearby - our guests are often adopted by the friendly villagers! The legendary Pillars of Hercules is a short drive away, a characterful cafe/restaurant with a very laid-back atmosphere, delicious home baked food, and health store - lots of tables outside and in. The Lomond Hills are on your doorstep for amazing 360 degree views of Fife (you can walk, or drive up most of the way to the East Lomond car park and viewing point), and the historic village of Falkland is a five minute drive away and well worth a visit, for its beautiful old buildings, famous tea rooms, gorgeous gift shops, and the fascinating and beautiful Falkland Palace and Gardens, which features one of the oldest tennis courts in the world. Outlander was filmed here. Falkland Estate is great for lovely walks, very popular with dog walkers. Heatherhall Woods is 5 minutes drive away and also lovely to walk with or without dogs. You will find that almost everyone you pass in Freuchie says hello! Freuchie is a fantastic base for exploring Fife and surrounding areas - there are beautiful golden, sandy beaches at Elie and St Andrews (both 30 minutes drive away), Tentsmuir forest and Kinshaldy beach, and numerous other beaches and pretty harbours in the East Neuk. Golf courses abound of course, including the Old Course itself at St Andrews and Lundin Links (20 minutes drive away). For sightseeing you can easily reach Edinburgh city centre in one hour, with many places to visit including the famous Edinburgh Castle and the Edinburgh and Fringe Festivals, Dundee with its exciting new V & A museum and Discovery Point, where you can explore the RRS Discovery ship, and the HMS Unicorn. St. Andrews is a beautiful and timeless place to visit, with its Castle, Cathedral, and beautiful university town, Dunfermline, the beautiful Culross, Perth and many other places of interest. All this is set amidst the gentle rolling hills of Fife with villages, garden centres, farm shops and museums scattered around. There are many hills and woodland walks to explore if you are a keen hiker, dog walker or runner. There are also many fantastic parks and places for children to visit, such as Cairnie Fruit Farm with an amazing play park and maze, the Deer Farm, Craigtoun Park with miniature train rides, trampolines and more! If you are using public transport, the nearest railway stations are at Ladybank and Markinch, both are a short taxi drive away from Freuchie. There are also good bus services in Freuchie, which will take you directly to St Andrews, Perth, Dundee and Edinburgh. There are also local taxi services. Guest access You will have full and private access to all of the cottage, plus a small seating area outside the back door, (feel free to drag chairs and cushions out, even a table!) and the bench at the side of the cottage. There is a good sized grassy area at the side, which is a public access area, but is little used other than the neighbour's access to their garage. Other things to note There is a 32" television with Freeview, Netflix, Prime and many other channels that you can sign in to, and a strong wi-fi connection. For the chillier nights, a lovely fleecy dual control electric blanket - with this as well as the stove, warm central heating and cosy woollen blankets, you will be as warm as toast! The bedding is 100% cotton and sheets and pillowcases are 200 thread count. You may need to reverse a short distance out of the road as there isn't much space to turn. If you are a dodgy reverser like me, you may want to park in the large, free car park 25 m from the front door - there is loads of space. We take great care in making sure the cottage is cleaned to a very high standard. Cleaning products will also be available for your own use, and we will ask you to place your used laundry into the striped laundry bags before leaving, and put the rubbish out. NB There is a 14 litre freezer compartment in the fridge. There is no dishwasher. There is a small coffee press/jug. Registration details FI 00095 F
