Description

This stunning C14th Manor, with renowned English Garden by Alan Mason, is located in the peaceful village of Porte de Roche but with easy access to Rennes and Nantes & only 1.5 hrs from St. Malo & just over 2 hrs to Caen ferry crossings to the UK. The space Le Manoir Anglais is known for its beautiful English Gardens set in 14 acres designed by Alan Mason. Great host and fantastic home made food, Free Wi Fi. The building is steeped in history with 11th century origins, it has been modified through the ages by successive noble families. There are eight centrally heated ensuite guest rooms, plus a self contained cottage. All the beds have electric blankets and cosy duvets so that even in the depth of winter the house is warm and cosy. There is a grand dining room seating 25 so this is a fabulous destination for hen parties, groups of friends and any type of family celebration. The kitchen is the heart of the ground floor with log fired heater set in a noble inglenook fireplace. Standing as it does on the crossroads and only two hundred metres from the bridge over the Vilaine river, it has always been of strategic importance. None more so than in the second World War when it was the centre of the local French resistance under the leadership of Marie Moquet, whose family owned the state for some 150 years. She used the house as a safe-haven, open night and day for Resistance fighters and escaping Allied pilots. In August 1944, the local Resistance were guarding the bridge, when a German column flying American colours and seeking to escape the allies, ambushed and murdered them. Indeed, the then Gardener of 'Le Manoir', Celestin Poulain was shot against the garden wall and remains buried there. There is now a memorial outside the front of the house to those brave young men who died. Marie Moquet was decorated after the war by both the French and General Eisenhower for the Americans, for her bravery and assistance in the escape of many allied airmen. Guest access Guests renting the whole house have access to the whole property with exception of Michelle's private suite. During your stay Michelle is always available but respect their guests privacy. Other things to note The gardens are open all day to the public from May-October. There are friendly dogs and cats, chickens and geese.
