Description
A historic 200 year old mill house cottage with large fireplace and the bubbling Cam Brook running right through the property. Set in 1.5 acres of beautiful, wild, nature filled garden this is the perfect countryside escape with easy access to amazing places to explore. Bath and Bristol -20-30 mins drive Wells -20 mins Cheddar Gorge -25 mins Stone Henge -50 mins Countryside walks to explore right from the front door including beautiful historic woodlands and a waterfall. Plus walkable pubs. The space Built over 200 years ago the cottage was originally built to house the owner of the corn mill next to it (now converted and is our family home). The cottage is quirky with lots of original features and has three floors. The cottage patio has a table for at least 6, a bbq, and looks over a cottage garden and nothing but trees and woodland beyond. The brook is a few steps away through a gate (with a bolt to keep dogs and small children safe). You can hear it from the 2 garden facing bedrooms as you go to sleep. There is also a fire bowl you are welcome to use for night time fires and marshmallow toasting - please ask as we use it too so we need to know in advance to put it in for you. On the ground floor is the kitchen, dining room and lounge with an open fire place. Due to guest feedback from elderly and young / just walking children please note that access to the lounge from the kitchen and and dining room has one or two steps. The ground floor is NOT completely level. The first floor has 2 bedrooms - a larger one at the front and a smaller one with a view of the garden at the back. Up 3 STEPS on the first floor (please note this for children and those unsteady on their feet BEFORE you book!) is a good sized bathroom with a and modern, digital waterfall shower. Update:13/08/25 Sadly our lovely vintage bath is out of order at the moment. We have restored it for many years and kept it going but it finally gave up fully last week. We need several weeks clear to replace it and this is scheduled for Dec 25 but subject to trade availability. Please contact us if a bath is essential to your booking and I will be happy to update you as to the current situation. ALL bedrooms have regular double beds. We do have put up single ‘camp style’ beds available (beds only) if you have a party that needs them. Please ask if so and we will put them in for you. PLEASE NOTE: There is an unusual and steep staircase up to the double height bedroom on the 2nd floor. This IS NOT SUITABLE for anyone with mobility issues or very young children. We are currently (March 2025) looking at putting in additional handrails for these stairs but its tricky given the wall structure. For those that don’t fall into that category, you still need to take care. Used safely though, it's worth it - it just about wins as the nicest room in the house! The cottage has a fully equipped kitchen including a 2 oven cooker and grill, 4 ring gas hob, microwave and good sized fridge and freezer. There is a big double sink and a dishwasher. Hot water is on demand. There is a 'Nest' independently controllable central heating system installed and a NOWtv box in the lounge. We don’t have live TV channels but from the NOW box you can access all the TV apps including BBC iPlayer, ITV, 4OD and get live tv through those, as well as the cottage subscription to Netflix, Prime and NOW movies. Full descriptions for how to work the TV is in the book. PLease ask if you need some help. We don’t have a subscription for sports channels but if you want to watch a ‘one off paid for’ match that is accessible through NOWTV that’s fine…just let us know and we can arrange a private payment to allow access. There is also an Echo in the downstairs area so you can 'ask Alexa' for any kind of music you want or to find out what the weather is going to be like that day! We also have Chromecast. In the lounge there are some board games, children’s toys and books as well as our collection of vintage and local area books. Read them as you like but please don’t take them away. Some of them came from my grandmother and are very old! One bath towel is provided for each guests - 6 in total. The cottage is ideal for for family and friend groups who want some time together and peace and quiet in a beautiful, tranquil spot with great access to countryside walks, summer bbqs or fireside games. All the attractions that Bristol, Bath, Wells, Cheddar, Wookey Hole and Glastonbury have to offer are a half hour drive away or less (and those are just the obvious ones). So you can enjoy them easily for a day trip and come back to some tranquility at the end of the day. There is lots to do and visit in the area, whatever the weather! There is a large open fireplace in the living room which you are welcome to use (apart from late spring months when we have jackdaws nesting in the chimney - it’s usually beyond the point you would need a fire because it is warm enough by then but please ask if you are arriving Mid April / May) . We DONT provide wood as a matter of course. You will see wood stacks in the garden but we rely heavily on this for our heating in the winter and just don’t have resources to provide wood for our guests too. During the winter months the local coops, the Spar in the next village and sometimes Tesco stock bags of kindling and wood - the postcode and details of how to get to all these are available in the information book in the cottage. In the kitchen we supply, for your convenience, fresh milk, either 6 eggs from our own chickens or as locally as we can supply them - sometimes there’s a mix - see if you can taste the difference! Fresh coffee for the cafetière, teabags, salt and pepper. Most of the time we have oil and vinegar and some sauces that we leave in when previous guests have left them as we know they might come in handy and don’t want to waste them. But these are not standard. You are very welcome to forage from the garden- when in season there are wild garlic, apples, pears and and sloe berries. If you forgot an ingredient you need for your evening meal...please just ask. For guests staying longer than a few days we will be happy to provide you with clean linen and towels anytime. This is a responsive service not an automatic one so please just send us a text /email / or call when you need them and we will deliver them to your door as soon as we can. If you are staying longer than a few days and need a washing machine let us know. You are welcome to use ours, it’s just inside our front door. We will always try and facilitate that if we can. Failing that, there are 24 hour accessible washers and dryers just a few minutes up the road in Clutton at The Somerset Toiletry company - where you can have a cup of tea and cake while you wait if you go in their cafe opening hours , or a there is also a regular laundrette in Midsomer Norton, 10 mins drive away. They also do service washes. We do our best to make our guests have a home away from home experience. If you find something is missing or isn't working as it should please do let us know and we will respond during your booking if we possibly can. We also try to be as green as possible. We refill our soap dispensers and washing up liquid, use eco friendly cleaning products and we encourage our guests to take care to sort their waste properly so it can be properly recycled. Our toilet paper is the most eco friendly we can find. At the time of writing that’s Naked Sprout. It’s 100% recycled and not bleached. So that’s why your toilet paper isn’t white. Does the job though! ;0) The cottage is ideally placed for family and friends parties attending weddings at Ston Easton (3 miles) and Priston (6 miles) also venues in Wells, Mells, Bath and Bristol. There are good local taxi services who can transport guests to and from the cottage (advanced booking advised though - let us know if you need help with this). There are 3 pubs that are walkable from the cottage. Two walkable at night, one only walkable in the daytime as it’s through the woods. The information book in the cottage has a full list of all the pubs, restaurants and take aways we recommend in the local area with postcodes and contact details. We have also provided maps to show how best to walk to the local pubs. We have two electric cars and use an outside plug to charge them. Guests are welcome to use this too. We charge this on at cost (at the time of writing this is 25p per kwh) Please let us know in advance if you would like to make use of this so we can make sure our cars are charged enough in advance. Let us know the KwHs you use and we will ask that you pay, on an honesty basis, for the amount used - please leave cash and let us know you have or ask for bank details to pay by BACS. It’s a slow charger so you will need to leave your car plugged in overnight to get a decent charge. The nearest public chargers are at the Farmborough community shop and Tesco in Midsomer Norton. Guests are very welcome to message us before the visit if any additional advance information is needed beyond this. Feel free to drop us a line. We will always try to be as responsive as we can. Guest access The cottage is completely self contained. It has it's own front door - the key is provided to guests on arrival - and it's own back door onto the private patio and wider garden. Guests are free to access, explore and play in the whole of the garden. Feel free to go wherever you like. We have a balcony leading out from our living room so please avoid coming up the steps to that…but the rest is all access! We love to see people exploring it! The cottage has it's own private garden with a paved terrace. It has a an area of lawn with an outdoor table for more than 6 and parasol for eating outside with a view over the wider garden. There is a good sized BBQ available for guest use. At the time of writing there are some homemade 'dens' to discover as well as a treehouse with views that stretch for miles. Children are welcome to use and play on any of them but suitable parental supervision is necessary - especially for the treehouse (it’s very high! ). In the summer months when the stream is low children are welcome to climb in and paddle as long as they have parental supervision at all times. Also fish for crayfish…There are lots! There are also boxes of wooden toys, puzzles and games for children to use and also grown up board games too. Other things to note The front of the house is on a country road with no pavement. Parking for cars (up to 3 spaces available) is just off this road so guests should take care when leaving the house with small children and dogs. It isn't a main road in any sense, and is generally very quiet - but on week day mornings and evenings during commuting periods we do get some traffic passing through. Guests often arrive on a Friday between 4.30 and 6 and this is generally the busiest period of all. If that’s you… please don’t be alarmed if it seems busy. It’s literally for an hour or so and, unless there is an unusual event like a road closure, for the rest of the weekend it will return to being a quiet country road again. Please note that the main picture on the listing is from the back of the house. There are pictures of the house from the front on the listing. Do familiarise yourself with those before you come so you recognise the property on your arrival. We are located between the villages of High Littleton and Temple Cloud. We are in a rural location so have no really close, walkable convenience stores. There are two small co-ops nearby in Paulton and Farrington Gurney- both are about an 8 minute drive away and close at 10pm. Our local Tesco store (not a superstore but big enough to do a good weekly shop) is a 12 minute drive away and open until 12pm Mon to Sat, 4pm on a Sunday. Please ask if there are specific requirements or questions related to our location before booking. We can’t really accommodate more than 3 cars off the road here. Please let us know if you have more vehicles before you arrive so we can advise of where else to park.
