Other things to note Please note that being a period building there is no lift access and there are four flights of stairs you need to climb so it’s not suitable for people with mobility issues , or severe respiratory conditions Forget what you think you know about the navy – a maritime masterclass waits for you in Pompey. One of the UK’s oldest seaside destinations (and the country’s only island city), Portsmouth was once the world’s greatest naval port. So, unsurprisingly, the big draw here is the nautical history. The city’s armada lies at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard – HMS Victory (1759-1765), HMS Warrior (1860) and the Mary Rose (Henry VIII’s lost warship, recovered from the ocean bed in 1982). But this is a forward-thinking, modern city, too. Head up the sail-shaped Spinnaker Tower for jaw-dropping views of The Solent and the Isle of Wight before strolling to chic designer outlet Gunwharf Quays. It’s worthy of the most discerning of shoppers – and when your bags get too heavy to lug around, nip into one of the buzzy restaurants. A mile further south is Southsea with its kitsch amusement arcades and a vast pebbly beach. And away from the seafront, Albert Road is home to independent boutiques, quirky cocktail bars and art galleries. It really is a city that has it all
