Description
The Grist Mill is an early 18th-century watermill which sleeps up to 8 in four double bedrooms. This listed Grade 2 landmark building has been restored as a gem of a holiday home, with contemporary comfort and style, surmounted by lantern and cupola. Enjoy open plan living in traditional style on the ground floor, and as you head up through the house you'll find cosy bedrooms and old machinery still in place, a relic of times past. Wooden beams, comfortable beds and new bathrooms. The space The ground floor has an entrance hall leading to a large open-plan kitchen-cum-dining/ living room, with two sofas, arm chairs and a snug wood-burning stove in addition to the central heating. The kitchen fully integrated, with dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave and an antique pine table set with Arts and Crafts ash chairs designed by Ernest Gimson. Wooden stairs lead to the first floor (stone floor of the mill), which sleeps four. The miller's bedroom has a rare and opulent early eighteenth-century oak four-poster king-sized bed. The second bedroom has twin beds. Both bedrooms have beautiful views over the mill pond. There is a small bathroom with a shower. The ample landing preserves a number of original mill features and the original loading-door opens to the west. The second floor (granary floor) acts as a hide for the bird life on the mill pond, with early 19th-century bolting machinery carefully preserved. Original elm stairs (steep and unsuitable for young children or the elderly); a door keeps the stairs closed off from children. Here is a large double bedroom with king-sized bed and an open children's room, with two single beds. A second bathroom makes this four-bedroomed cottage comfortable for eight guests. Above this floor is a gantry cat-walk. A sack-hoist hangs in the cupola, whence light filters down through successive levels of glazed floor lights set in the traps. Guest access The Grist Mill is situated in the heart of Owlpen valley below the Manor kitchen garden, with lovely views over the mill pond and the valley. It has its own drive and enclosed garden, including a large table for al fresco dining. The private garden offers complete serenity, with the constant murmur of the Ewelme brook running gently by. The Grist Mill is set in a private valley on the Owlpen estate, with all the romance of its 900 year-history, in the most picturesque part of the Cotswolds. 2 hours west of London. Wander the gardens of the Tudor manor house at your leisure, and enjoy miles of walks in private woodland in this hidden corner of the Cotswolds. Other things to note Every cottage at Owlpen is child friendly, and there are lots of things for little explorers to do on the estate, whether it's building dens in the woods, meeting the farm animals or playing in the carefully tended gardens. We can provide additional accessories on request to help with your stay and limit the amount of child equipment you have to bring, such as toys, books, children's cutlery and dinnerware, and changing matts.
