Other things to note The construction of the city of Châtel-Guyon is different from that of the other thermal resorts. It was not built around the springs during the time of the Gallo-Roman, like the other towns of Auvergne waters, but around the Calvary hill where farmers sought protection. Peasant life was mainly organized around the vineyard. The city is on the edge of one of the most fertile plains in France: the Limagne. At an altitude of 409 meters, it goes to the edge of the Sardon River. Châtel-Guyon also marks the entrance to the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park and the Combrailles Massif. Following the discovery of the rare properties of the Châtel-Guyon spring, a sumptuous thermal district was born. The waters of Châtel-Guyon are unique in Europe for their magnesium content. The station specializes in indications of the digestive and urinary system, and in rheumatology. The thermal park houses the various springs called Marguerite, Germaine, Yvonne, Louise … Mont-Oriol is the third novel by Guy de Maupassant, published in Paris by Victor Havard in 18871. In this novel, Maupassant takes up themes that are dear to him through a plot where love passions and financial stakes intersect. Coming from Paris in Auvergne with her husband William, on the lands of the village of Enval, undergoing a thermal treatment against an alleged infertility, Christiane Andermatt discovers love with Paul Brétigny. Her husband, a banker, relentlessly speculates on land in the region, building a new city of waters to grow his fortune. Father Oriol: a rich and economical peasant, the first winegrower of the country, well known in the valley of Enval, he has fifty thousand francs of income, the fruit of parsimonious savings. In nearby towns (Châtel-Guyon, Tournoël, Saint-Hippolyte), he is also a local celebrity, a figure known for the quality of his wine and for his fortune. Father of a son, "Colossus" and two lovely young girls, he forms projects for his children. A tough negotiator, he seeks to take advantage of the source that has appeared on his land.
