Nesquim is where the first whaling company in the Azores was born. This stone house was a ruin when we found it — covered by an enormous fig tree that gave it its name. Rebuilt by a local family from the village, with stone from the island and a roof with a story. From the terrace, dolphins pass weekly between May and October. Whales appear between May and August. No boat needed. Just you, the open sea, and a house that was made to feel like home. Guests who come once tend to come back. The space Adega da Figueira is a two-floor stone house for up to 4 guests, built in the 1930s and carefully rebuilt from ruin in 2004 with respect for everything that was already there. The upper floor — accessed from the covered terrace — has one double bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen with the original basalt fireplace, a living room, and a bathroom. The covered terrace, sheltered from the weather, is where most guests spend most of their time. The ground floor has a second double bedroom with private bathroom and its own independent exterior entrance — completely private, ideal for two couples or a family with older children. Air conditioning throughout. Natural sea pool and working fishing harbour, both 10 minutes on foot. Inside: an old oar from the ruin restored by Maria, century-old lacework, antique plates and family objects over 100 years old. Things that belong to this house and nowhere else. Guest access Guests have full access to the entire house and 300m² of private outdoor space — terrace, garden, barbecue area, and sun loungers. But the real access this house offers is harder to describe. At dawn, blackbirds announce the morning before any alarm could. Between May and October, dolphins are sighted from the terrace on a near-weekly basis. Between May and August, whales occasionally appear on the same horizon — never guaranteed, always unforgettable. At dusk, walk 10 minutes to the clifftop where Cory's shearwaters return to their nesting site. Hundreds of them, in low flight over the ocean. One of the most remarkable natural sounds on the island — and one most visitors to Pico never hear. The barbecue, the garden, the sun loungers — they're all here. So is everything else. Other things to note Adega da Figueira is not for everyone — and that is intentional. There is no resort amenities. What there is: a stone terrace facing the open Atlantic, a village that has not been altered for tourism, natural sea pools and a working harbour 10 minutes on foot, and two restaurants within 20 minutes — including Bioma, one of the finest tasting menu experiences in the Azores. For guests who want to wake up to birdsong, watch dolphins from their own terrace, and fall asleep to the sound of the ocean — this is the right place. For guests who need a heated pool and a daily concierge — there are better options on the island. Previous guests warn us: sitting on the terrace watching the sea has a way of consuming entire days without warning. Minimum stay: 4 nights in summer, 3 nights in spring and autumn, 2 nights in winter. Honest advice — Calheta de Nesquim alone is worth two days. The rest of the island can wait.
