Wifi is provided free of charge, but can be intermittent during rain or snow storms. San Cristobal is an old village with around two hundred families. It is about eleven miles from our property to the outskirts of Taos. It is 23miles to Taos ski valley, and Red River Ski are 22 miles away, about 25 minutes travel time. Some of the families in our valley date back several hundred years. San Cristobal is surrounded by national forest and there are several scenic hikes close to our property. The San Cristobal creek runs through the valley and many of the gardens are watered by the ditches, diverted from the mother creek. These are called acequias and the laws surrounding these date back to the Spaniards. D.H. Lawrence ranch where Frieda and D.H. Lawrence lived and are now buried is also located in San Cristobal, five miles from our property. Lama Foundation is a commune and spiritual community, dating from the sixties. It is located on Lama Mountain, 8.3 miles from San Cristobal, about fifteen minutes. Lama Foundation is best known for the book "Be here Now" written by Ram Dass who used to live at Lama Foundation. Clothing optional. Go south on 522 from San Cristobal and turn right (west) onto US Hwy 64 at the stop light. Turn right on Tune Road, roughly across from Taos airport. Go north on Hwy 522 to Questa. Turn right on Hwy 38 and follow it until you get there. Angel Fire is 40 miles from San Cristobal. Take Hwy 522 south. Turn left at the light at Taos Plaza on to US 64. Follow Hwy 64 east across the mountains and follow the signs to Angel Fire. RAFTING AND KAYAKING Seasonal rafting, tubing, and kayaking on the Rio Grande and the Chama River is available from several outfitters and sporting goods stores. Free classes for 0 – 6 year olds and free craft sessions for all ages. HIKING Timber Canyon Springs - A nearby hike starts at the end of the driveway! Exit the lodge and walk right on Old State Road 3. Walk past the Taos Goji small log cabins and cross the cattle guard and Taos Goji Ceremony field. You will see a small yellow storage shed and a brown trailer/cabin to your left. Continue up the hill and pass the second brown cabin with a porch until you get to the south of the fence and the property border. The fence turns, and there is a little disguised opening. Walk along that fence line and you will see a trail that leads to the left (north east) behind the brown cabin on the hill. (There may be footprints, ski tracks, hoof prints… It's a favorite of many of us, though it's rare that you'll see anyone.) Follow that trail -- you may have to let yourself through a gate and fence, close the gate behind you -- and it leads to Timber Springs Canyon, a tiny beautiful creek winding among tall ponderosas. If you follow it to its conclusion you'll end in the box canyon; before that, you can climb up to the right (not hard to find a trail) to the DH Lawrence Ranch road above. Then you can turn right on that road and follow it down to its intersection with the main road. Many locals tend to turn around and double back rather than walking up to the Ranch Road if they have limited time; when it's not snowy, the walk takes about 45 minutes. Add the Ranch Road extension and snow and you're probably looking at a good hour plus. San Cristobal Canyon Trail – It can be muddy/snowy/rocky driving to the trailhead, but it is a beautiful trail that will take you as far as you want to go into the wilderness. Drive out of the lodge to the left on the Old State road 3 and then turn right onto Camino del Medio. Continue straight on the same road for a few miles driving toward the mountains. Eventually you will come to a graveled parking area with a clear trailhead sign. The trail leads down into a valley before you start up the canyon. You will cross a creek several times, so wear footwear that can get wet. There are hundreds of trails in the Taos area. There are maps and knowledgeable people in Taos outdoor stores. Please be safe and let somebody know whee you are going and when you expect to be back(URL HIDDEN) The Ridge - Drive left out from the lodge on Old State Road. Pass the Post office and take a left when the road curves. You will pass the Cordova Road. Park on the road shoulder and you will see the forest trail. Keep to your right on the trail. You will come to a cattle fence. Just go on through but be sure to close the gate behind you. When you get to the top of the ridge, turn right and walk as far as you want (you could be gone for days if you are a backpacker). You will be able to see as far as the Truchas mountains above Santa Fe to the south and Guadalupe Mountain and sometimes the Colorado mountains to the north. You can also see the cut of the Rio Grande Gorge to the west and the Jemez Mountains to the southwest. You can turn around and retrace your steps or you can keep on going until you reach a dirt road. Turn right on the dirt road to circle back to San Cristobal. It's probably a little more than 6 miles in all. FLY FISHING The Rio Grande Box offers especially good fishing in the fall for Rainbows and Browns. Moderate to difficult hiking and wading is necessary to fish the majority of the river, though there is some good vehicle access at the John Dunn Bridge and further downstream near Pilar. Choosing to hike into the canyon can offer solitude and better fishing. Wading in the Rio Grande ranges from difficult to downright dangerous. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen and wear a hat. The lower section of the Rio Hondo, 10 miles north of Taos, offers easy river access just before its confluence with the Rio Grande. The upper Hondo runs much faster. There are good holes in this section, but beware of brush along the stream's banks. Browns and Cutthroats will eagerly take dry flies in the warmer months. If you are looking for solitude and slow water, try the Rio Chiquito Little Rio Grande) watershed. Ther are about 50 miles of streams, some areas only 5 o 10 feet wide. Small trout and brazen brush, but some ope areas and beaver ponds for quiet angling. The Rio Pueblo is a good-sized creek in a rugges canyon. The river flows northwest and oxbows Hwy 518 for several miles. There are plenty of good holding areas with some reasonable size Browns and Rainbows. The river scenery is stunning. You can get to Lama either via State Road 3 (turn left on the second dirt road after taking a left on Old State Road 3 from the lodge) or via NM Hwy 522 (go north from San Cristobal and follow the signs to Lama). The Blue Bus bus stop is about a mile northwest of the lodge but the schedule is limited. Twin Hearts Bus Shuttle Service provides a drop off and pickup to Santa Fe and Albuquerque airports. For parties larger than 35 we recommend a local bus service to bring guests to the farm. There is a wood stove in each cabin, fully equipped kitchen and bath. The Eco-Lodge is now powered by solar and all cabins except the Artist's Retreat are heated by air heat pumps. The hideaway Artist's Retreat is heated by propane, electric heaters and a wood fire stove. Fresh organic eggs and veggies available seasonally. Cabins and tipis are cleaned with biodegradable cleaning products (mostly vinegar) and fragrance-free and eco friendly detergents are used on the linens. Our delicious drinking water comes from our deep wells. Most bedding is organic. And we recycle. Perfectly inbetween, we are 20 miles to Taos Ski Valley and 20 miles to Red River Ski Area. The lodge and farm remains a quiet, rustic getaway from modern life. There are ten cabins on the property, glamping venues, i.e. tipis and a bunk house plus a 1600 sq ft open barn, and a 500 sq feet log cabin that serves as an extra indoor event space. The land and contains a seasonal stream, two ponds, many cottonwood, pine, and aspen trees, five acres of goji plants, seasonal vegetable gardens, a greenhouse, fruit trees, a children's playground, flower gardens, chickens, goats and lambs. The land and its surroundings offer a host of quiet walking areas. Nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, we are surrounded by the Kit Carson National Forest, which offers lots of walking or cross country trails. 10 miles to Taos, 20 miles to Taos Ski Valley, and 20 miles to Red River Ski Area. We are located in the countryside, which means lots of quiet and starry nights. Cell reception is limited, and sometimes requires a walk down the road. Wifi is provided throughout the property, but can be spotty during rain and snow storms. We are not a hotel. There is no front office or permanent lodge staff.
