Description

Stay at Mapperton Estate and enjoy historic Mapperton House, award‑winning formal gardens, miles of walking trails and abundant wildlife, set within a pioneering rewilding project restoring natural landscapes — all just minutes from the Jurassic Coast. Garden Cottage offers a beautiful historical retreat, located 100m south of Mapperton House, home to the Earl and Countess of Sandwich. The space Garden Cottage is a Grade II-listed, built around 1900, with earlier elements dating back to the 17th century. It is tucked into a historic terraced wall and enjoys beautiful views across the award-winning Mapperton Gardens and rolling countryside beyond. Stylishly restored, Garden Cottage blends antique charm with modern comfort, including a characterful inglenook open fire for cosy evenings. Sleeping up to six guests, the cottage offers three characterful bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a well-equipped kitchen. A private, enclosed garden surrounds the cottage, offering outdoor seating on the northern side for sunny mornings and on the southern side for relaxed evenings. Guest access Guests enjoy complimentary access to Mapperton Gardens and Wildlands (March–October), along with reduced-price guided tours of Mapperton House (£5 per person). Please note that access to Mapperton Gardens and Wildlands is only available during opening hours, Sunday to Thursday. Other things to note There will be some basic food items ready for your arrival, including a pint of milk, eggs, bread and local wine. Please note: There is a high wall overlooking Mapperton Gardens which makes the garden unsuitable for unsupervised children. The Coach House Cafe on the estate is open Sunday to Thursday (March to October). Offering a selection of homemade cakes, fresh sandwiches, seasonal salads, and hearty soups, alongside freshly brewed coffee, a variety of teas, and other refreshments. Mapperton Estate is home to some of the finest country walks in Dorset– full of spectacular views, endowed with history and teeming with wildlife. We have three walking trails of different lengths to choose from, from 1.5 to 2.5 hours long. There are also many stunning walking routes that go beyond the estate. During the open season from March to October we have two natural wild play areas for children which are both free. There are two local towns for eating, drinking and shopping: Beaminster, a picturesque market town two miles away and Bridport, a larger market town 6 miles away. We are very fortunate to have two outstanding local restaurants in Beaminster, commonly agreed to be among the best in Dorset. Brassica, and The Ollerod.
