Loon is a serene retreat for those looking to unwind by the lake or explore the nearby hiking trails, including New Hampshire’s 48 4K peaks and stunning waterfall hikes. Our family-run mini motel is a laid-back space where guests can disconnect and enjoy the area's natural beauty. Guest access As a guest at Loon, you’ll have access to a mix of private and shared outdoor spaces that offer both relaxation and the opportunity to enjoy nature. Loon features a private covered porch with a table and two chairs, perfect for quiet moments with a view of the lake. You’ll also have your own fire pit for cozy evenings under the stars. The property provides direct access to the lake, with a shared dock and grass beach available for all guests. Feel free to use the shared kayaks (seasonally available) after signing a simple liability waiver. You can also launch your own non-powered boats from the beach—no license required—or enjoy a swim in the warmer months. Fishing is a popular activity here, with bass and perch commonly caught in the lake. Just be sure to have a valid fishing license, and you can purchase nightcrawlers from local honor stands in the summer. During the winter, the frozen lake offers the perfect setting for ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. If you plan on ice fishing, please follow local regulations and ensure you have the appropriate licenses. For those bringing a snowmobile, you can access trails directly from the property. We’re happy to help with trailer parking—just let us know in advance. And for a peaceful moment, take a seat on the shared bench swing, which sits on the lawn facing the lake and is available for all guests to enjoy. Other things to note Reminder: North Country House is a mini motel with other units on the property. You’ll enjoy your own private space, but please be mindful of shared outdoor areas and other guests. For a Peaceful Stay: While Loon is designed with your privacy and comfort in mind, you may occasionally hear the soft sounds of our family in the unit next door. To ensure restful mornings, we’ve provided a sound machine to use as needed. Cancellation & Rescheduling: We adhere strictly to our cancellation policies. If you need to reschedule, please notify us at least 14 days before your check-in date. No Day Guests: In order to maintain the peaceful atmosphere for all guests, day visitors are not permitted under any circumstances. What to Bring: • General Needs: Coffee, tea, ice, flashlight (especially if arriving after dark), firewood (also available for purchase on-site), fishing gear, and your preferred food and beverages. • Summer: Beach towels, insect repellent, sunscreen, swimsuits, non-powered watercraft, and charcoal. • Winter: Crampons, snowshoes, cross-country skis, and ice skates for the local rink at King Square in Whitefield. Dark Nights & Starry Skies: Our remote location means minimal light pollution, resulting in stunning night skies. However, it also means it gets very dark at night, so we recommend bringing a flashlight or headlamp for evening arrivals or strolls. Safety by the Water: As we’re on lakefront property without lifeguard supervision, we ask that children under 12 not be left unattended for safety reasons. Fireside Gatherings: Firewood is available for sale at $9 per bundle (about a cubic foot) or 3 for $25. Each unit, including Loon, has its own private fire pit for a cozy night under the stars. Navigating Winter Roads: We’re located off an unpaved, private road in the mountains with a hill leading down to the property. The road is regularly plowed, and if you have experience driving in snow with an AWD/4WD or FWD vehicle, you should be fine. However, we don’t recommend making the trip with a RWD vehicle or without snow-driving experience. Overflow Parking & Trailer Handling: If you need additional parking, Burns Lake Farm at the hilltop (about a 5-minute walk away) offers overflow parking. If you’re bringing a snowmobile or trailer, you can unhook it at the farm’s lot. Please assess road conditions before driving down to the property and let us know in advance if you need trailer parking.
