Description

Warm and modern two-bedroom, newly restored Northumbrian stone cottage. Close to Hadrians Wall and Northumberland National Park. The former farmstead is set within its own meadows and oak woodbanks. Ecological principles have been followed in every hand-crafted detail with the use of locally sourced and natural materials to make a breathable, healthy house. Quiet and secluded, environmentally conscious retreat for those who enjoy birdwatching and walks, dark skies, owl hoots and wood fires. The space The ground floor is made of waxed concrete with thermostatically controlled underfloor heating. There is also a wood burning stove in the sitting room with split logs stacked outside. In the kitchen is a table to sit from four to six. Handcrafted built-in furniture in solid elm holds an induction hob, electric oven, fridge and dish washing machine. Also on the ground floor is the shower room and wc which is finished in Moroccan tadelakt plaster. Upstairs, are two bedrooms; a UK king-size double bed and a second bedroom with twin beds. All beds have natural hemp mattresses and are made up with hypoallergenic eiderdown and feather duvets, pillows and natural linen. The front door leads out onto a south facing cottage garden for your own use. Ecological living: As well as the floor, the walls and ceilings are also heated by ground source heat pumps from four bore holes. Electricity is from the grid and supplemented by solar power. Drinking water is filtered from own well. Waste is managed with a septic tank. Organic soaps and cleaning materials are supplied and septic tank friendly. The two foot thick stone walls are plastered with organic lime hemp on top of a layer of recycled cork. The floors are insulated with natural sheep wool. Guest access You have the whole of the cottage with its cottage garden on the front and a terrace on the side. You are welcome to walk the 25 acres of land. Other things to note There is a long flagstone terrace on the south side and a bigger gravel terrace on the west, with two chairs and table overlooking old oak woodland. You are welcome to gather wood and light your own fire on the land. For those with a bigger group The Wrack and Croy Shepherds Hut can also be booked for another two.
