Description
On Virginia’s beautiful Eastern Shore, The Birdhouse at Windfall Farm is the ultimate romantic getaway. Just steps from Pungoteague Creek (a short boat ride to the Chesapeake Bay)on one side and a picturesque large stocked pond on the other, The Birdhouse is a charming 1 bedroom hideaway, with abundant wildlife, walking trails on our 62 acre working farm, kayaking, fishing, crabbing, and stargazing, all amid Nature’s beauty. Be our guest for an unforgettable time on Virginia’s Eastern Shore! The space The Birdhouse cottage is well detached from the main house, where we live, and is your exclusively private space with a wraparound deck where you can sit with a beer or a glass of wine and look out over Pungoteague Creek. The cottage was originally a writer’s studio, and, fun fact, the screenplay for the movie, “Patton” was written there! Pungoteague Creek, steps from your back door, leads directly into the Chesapeake Bay. There is a public boat ramp at Harborton if you want to launch your boat, and you are more than welcome to tie it up on our own private dock. Please be aware, we are a working waterfront farm, with all of the wildlife you could hope for, and a few you wouldn’t hope for: bugs! Depending on the season and temperature, you could encounter mosquitoes, ticksHouse flies, the ocasional stink bug, “no see ums”, bumblebees, and others. Please bring your favorite insect spray. If you forget, we have insect spray available, and there are stores in town with everything you need. We hope the possibility of bugs won’t deter you, we live here full time and the beauty of nature is well worth the price of encountering her critters! Note for the Fall season: Fall is the time of year that Stink Bugs will try to sneak into the house in search of a warm place to hibernate for the winter. If you should see a stink bug, the best thing to do is to use a wad of toilet paper to pick him up and then flush him down the toilet. 😄 Large mouth bass abound in the freshwater pond, right outside your door, prize winners have been caught there! Many of our guests have made some great memories catching fish, some big ones, too! We are a working farm and raise Dexter cattle and we have horses, chickens (and a rooster who crows!), and pigs. There are walking trails throughout the wooded acres, where you may see Great Blue Herons, Ospreys, Eagles, wild ducks, foxes, raccoons, deer, geese, otters, and the occasional dolphin. 2 kayaks are available to use, as well as fishing gear and crab pots for catching crabs off the dock, and if you want to eat those crabs you caught, we’ll even loan you a cooker! The cottage has been recently renovated, a fully equipped kitchen with quartz countertops, range/oven, full size fridge, microwave, Keurig coffeemaker, electric kettle, panini press, and cooking utensils. The living room offers a comfortable sofa, quartzite fireplace with new gas logs for warmth and romantic ambiance, smart tv, DVD player, and Bluetooth stereo. There is a cute little rechargeable Bluetooth speaker that can be taken out on the deck for your enjoyment. The bedroom features a romantic antique queen size bed with luxurious high quality linens. Double French doors open to your private deck overlooking the Pungoteague Creek. The bathroom features a romantic clawfoot tub and vanity sink carved from onyx. The shower is outside on the deck, perfectly private, and also has a lower faucet just for dog (or foot) washing. We love our pets, and we know you do, too, so we’re pet friendly! We have 2 small dogs and a cat, so we ask that you leash your dog when walking about the farm. You are welcome to visit the horses and cattle through the fence, being careful of your fingers, as horses may accidentally bite your fingers! Thanks for considering The Birdhouse, we look so forward to sharing all this with you! Guest access Guests are welcome to walk about the farm, on the trails in the woods, and on the boat dock. You may fish in the freshwater pond, or off the dock, in Pungoteague Creek, which is part of the Chesapeake Bay. Please allow us our privacy in the main house which is our full time home. Other things to note The Eastern Shore has been affectionately called “Paradise With Bugs”, various bugs could be encountered, please bring insect spray, or if you forget, we have some available. Walmart and other stores are a short drive away to buy everything you need. Cell phone service is somewhat sketchy, but most guests say it is adequate, when WiFi calling is enabled on their cellphones. We’re proud to announce that we have recently switched to Starlink for WiFi, and we are thrilled with the performance it offers, I did a speed test recently, and it showed that the speed has improved roughly 10 times what it was with the previous (non Satellite) system! Dining related: Restaurants here tend to close earlier than more urban areas, so you’ll want to take that into consideration, especially as you arrive on your first night here. There is a Walmart and a Food Lion grocery store 10-15 minutes away, as well as McDonalds, Wendy’s, and Bojangles that may be open later. Please bring water shoes to protect your feet from oyster shells if you intend to use the kayaks.
