Custom built Scandinavian rustic log cabin with modern amenities and ideal location on the shore of the Michigamme River Basin in the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The cabin was designed and hand built with a "cave theme" to go along with large cave-like rock formation and hills adjacent to the property. The open interior space, large hand-scribed red pine logs with arched entryways, knotty pine trim, exposed granite formation in the basement bathroom, and beautiful views of the water and woods make this cabin a special retreat that is both rustic and elegant. Walking up the stairs to the main arched entrance, there is a covered entryway with space for outdoors gear you want to keep outside but undercover--coolers, gear bags, sporting equipment etc. The main arched entrance brings you into the large "foyer" area which connects the rear patio door, the "Solarium", and the Great Room. The Solarium is the rec-room, so named because of all the windows which provide for natural light and great natural views. There are 2 couches, a tournament Tornado foosball table, a flatscreen TV with DVD and cable for rainy days, and plenty of toys/games for kids or adults. The patio door opens to the back of the cabin overlooking the Michigamme river. Take a walk along the backside of the cabin for a unique view of the waterfront. A more finished patio area is in the works for next year. The Great Room area includes the living, dining, and kitchen areas into one large open space. There are comfy couches in front of the large windows overlooking the woods and waterfront. The dining room table seats 6 comfortably with additional room at the kitchen island. Modern appliances include a full refrigerator/freezer, propane range/oven, 4-man toaster, coffeemaker and grinder (for those fresh beans!), and stainless pots/pans for the chef in the family. A full dishwasher means more time at the bonfire and less time cleaning up. An old antique wood cook stove is fully functional and perfect for keeping hot water or soup on hand. Installation of a wood burning fireplace is in the works for 2016. The master bedroom has a cedar-log framed queen bed and dresser, with adjacent master bath (including shower). There is also a covered patio area off of the master bedroom that overlooks the river and is a perfect spot for watching the sunset or last embers of the bonfire. Heading downstairs, there is a mud area that is perfect for staging and drying all of the days adventure gear and a 2nd Bedroom that has a nice view of the river. The Adventure Room is an extension of the mud area and has plenty of room for staging of gear and clothing. There is a utility room with a deep sink and a full washer and dryer for laundry needs. The Bunk Room is a good sized space with a total of (3) cedar log bunks (2 full, 1 twin) and (2) closets with dressers for storage. The Basement Bathroom is adjacent to the bunk room and is a unique room in itself, as it was built partially into the granite rock foundation--to keep with the cave theme! The bathroom also has a whirlpool jet tub and a large open shower area. Because the granite rocks keep cool year round, it can get very "foggy" in this room when the hot tub or shower is running which makes for a very relaxing experience. Headed outside, there is a large firepit for year-round bonfires, and a woodfired Finnish Sauna. The Sauna fits 4-5 people comfortably and has a gowning area with a mini-fridge for refreshments. There is a short path from the Sauna deck down to the water to enjoy the true Sauna experience! Another unique feature of the property is there are numerous chainsaw-carved "critters" dotted along the roadway and in various locations that were created by the original builder/owner. In floor radiant heating keeps the cabin warm in the chilly winter months. With (7) total heating zones, the individual room temperatures can be adjusted to each person's preference. Guests have access to the full cabin, wood-fired Finnish sauna and deck near the shore of the river, over 400' of river frontage with both a dock and raft for swimming, and 5 acres of wooded and very rocky terrain to explore. There are several outdoor chairs available around the bonfire area, sauna deck, and the covered porch. There are (4) Kayaks with life preservers available for use -- the Michigamme River Basin is perfect for taking in wildlife or fishing while kayaking. Our intent is to get you everything you might need to get started (firewood, charcoal, cooking essentials, maybe a local seasonal culinary treat or two). If possible, I try to meet in person initially to turn over the keys and walk thru some of the features of the home and property. After that, the intent is to leave you alone to enjoy the cabin and create your own UP memories. For guests with specific requests for local food, drink, activities, etc. we can try and accommodate as best as possible. The Northern Wisconsin and UP areas are well known for their smoked meats, cheeses, and fish, as well as exceptional craft breweries and wineries in the area. We are available by cell phone/text at all times and are within a 2.5 hr drive in case onsite support is needed. The cabin sits nestled on the elevated and wooded shoreline of the Michigamme River, specifically, "The Basin" which is basically a wide and deep spot in the river and perfect for boating, fishing, swimming, kayaking, hanging out at the Republic Public Beach in summer, or ripping shots on the home-made pond hockey rink in winter. The cabin is easy to access--it's close enough to civilization for convenience but secluded enough to make you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. The recreational activites in the area are plentiful from snowmobiling and ATV'ing year-round to exploring the Iron Ore Heritage Trail which starts in downtown Republic. There are top notch brewpubs and restaurants in Ishpeming (Jerzi's on 41, Cognition Brewing!) and Marquette (Vierling Restaurant). Iron Mountain has an awesome authentic Italian deli (Crispignia's). There is a small bait and tackle shop in Champion (about 15 min drive) for fishing needs. There is a convenience store in South Republic (5 min to the south) that has almost any cabin essential you can think of. A vehicle is needed to access the cabin off of the main highway--preferrably a 4x4 or AWD in the winter months. The cabin is about 1/3 mile off of M95 on a hilly/rocky/winding road. The cabin is halfway between Iron Mountain and Marquette, 2.5 hours from Green Bay, WI, and about 3.5 hours from the Mackinaw bridge. Republic has a convenience store for necessities within a few minutes drive. The next closest town of any size is Ishpeming and is approx 20 min away for a larger selection of restaurants, groceries, or supplies. Marquette is approx 45 min away for an even larger array of food, entertainment, outdoors, and cultural events/activities. The mosquitos can be pesky in the late Spring and Summer months--don't forget your bug spray! The tapwater at the cabin is very clean and tastes great due to the depth of the well, however, using too much water too quickly will result in lower water pressure/flow which takes a few hours to replenish.
