Tuhitarata Shearers’ Quarters

Tuhitarata Escape is part of the historical station at Tuhitarata and comprises five separate studios each with a bedroom and bathroom and opening on to a verandah. There is a shared lounge with a kitchenette at end of verandah and pool and spa . Enjoy a stroll in the beautiful gardens and walk to the historic graveyard where the local paramount chief and his wife Ani are buried together with the McMaster family, who settled Tuhitarata in the 1850s. The space Tuhitarata is bounded by unspolit NZ rainforest, over 400 years old and offers guests not only a delightful country stay but the chance to get up close to 400 year old Kahikatea (NZ's tallest tree species). The cottage on the property was the home of Angus and Mary McMaster who settled there in the mid 1840s. Their son Hugh Paratene McMaster was the first Pakeha child born in Wairarapa and all are interred in the historic cemetery at Tuhitarata. Tuhitarata is one of Wairarapa's original sheep stations. There maybe guests in other accomodation on property but they do not share this building. Janelle and Rob (owners) reside in the homestead some 60 m away. In summer there is a pool available to all guests. Can hire less than 5 bedrooms but other bedrooms may be rented by others - call Lacewood or see other offerings with option for 2,3 or 4 bedrooms at lower price. Other things to note Tuhitarata Estate also hosts Lacewood weddings. At night, one can hear moreporks and view the beauty of the Wairarapa night sky.
