Description

Tucked away at the bottom of a lush green valley beside a river, our yurt has thick wool linings and a woodburner so its cosy for off-season stays. Away from the road, it's just you and nature. At night you can hear foxes and owls; on a clear night the milkyway is visible, no light pollution here! By day, buzzards circle over the valley, swallows swoop and dive - all with the backdrop of the river running by. Ideal for retreat from the bustle of modern life, simple yet with modern comforts. The space The field contains just this one yurt. So you have exclusive use of the yurt, facilities and field. No-one else nearby! Inside the yurt there is a comfortable double bed with a dual-control electric blanket. A chest of drawers for your clothes, a dining table with chairs, a sideboard holding cups, glasses, plates, bowls and cutlery with a tray with a toaster and kettle, teas and fresh coffee on top. Two comfy armchairs either side of the woodstove provide a cosy space to relax in. A trunk contains extra blankets for snuggling under. The woodstove chucks out heat and is set ready to light and simple to use (we can show you how). Wool linings inside the yurt walls and roof insulate the canvas and help to hold the heat in for those cooler nights. The well-equipped kitchen is solely for your use - a cooker (gas hob and electric oven), fridge (with small freezer compartment ) and dishwasher. Equipment includes a frying pan, two lidded pans, colander, grater, sieve and cooking implements along with some basic seasoning ingredients. A hot shower and flushing toilet give you the essentials of modern living with the rustic experience of yurt-dwelling. Towels and toiletries are provided for your use during your stay. You can rinse salty wetsuits in a water barrel and there’s an indoor drip-dry washing line and drying rack next to the kitchen. A barbecue, picnic table with sun umbrella are ready for al-fresco eating (coals provided). Sun-loungers are available for your use here and there’s also good-sized firebowl for a proper off-the-ground camp fire. There is no hot-tub - we think the water quantity and sanitising chemicals required with each changeover would be detrimental to the eco-system here. Instead we can offer natural river paddling (some areas are deeper than others!) . The river is spawning habitat for Atlantic salmon, sea trout, brown trout, lamprey, European eel and bullhead. You can see why we are so keen to look after our sewage treatment plant (see next paragraph) Please note : Because we are beside a river we have a private drainage system - our toilet and drain waste is processed through a mini sewage treatment plant - the end result of this process means nothing hazardous enters the river. The system is very sensitive and relies on natural breakdown through bacteria, microbes and oxygen. We have to be very careful what goes down the drains! We provide 'who gives a cr*p" loo roll which breaks down well, and the toiletries and cleaning products we provide are sympathetic to this system. Any harsh chemicals will damage the treatment plant Please help us look after this fragile system and the health of the river by only using the products we supply- or your own environmentally friendly products. No chemical nasties please! Guest access Guests can drive though our gate and up a stone track to park beside the yurt. We are five miles away from the coast with Crackington Haven being the nearest beach. Good surfing can be found here and along the north coast to Widemouth (15 mins) and Bude (20 mins). In the opposite direction is Trebarwith Strand and further afield Daymer Bay, Treyarnon and Polzeath. The pretty villages of Boscastle, Port Isaac (home to Doc Martin) and Padstow are not too far; the well-known surfing beaches of Watergate Bay and Fistral at Newquay are reachable in under an hour. Inland the wilds of Bodmin Moor beckon with plenty of footpaths leading you to waterfalls or standing stones - explore at your leisure. Local OS maps are in the yurt for your use while staying with us. There are local cycle routes marked on maps -just bear in mind its very hilly around here! A car is your best option for getting here and getting around. Other things to note You will have exclusive use of the yurt and facilities, and the field it is situated in. No other buildings, yurts, caravans are visible, you will be truly tucked away in your own rural escape! We lived in this yurt for two years, experiencing the winter storms, sub-zero temperatures and snowfall of the ‘beast from the east’ and the heavy snowfall the following year. So we really do know that the yurt is warm and cosy in the most extreme temperatures! It can also get very hot in the sun and we will show you how to adjust the raincap to let the heat out. As it has been our home, we can help you with any questions or practical advice you may need during your stay – please do not hesitate to ask us for help – we will always happily help you than have you uncomfortable, (or worst case scenario have the yurt damaged from lack of knowledge). We are excited to share this way of living with our visitors and hope you enjoy it as much as we have done. There is no washing machine at the yurt but laundry can be arranged if needed for a small charge. Towels are just for use at the yurt – please bring your own beach towels. A full basket of wood for the woodburner is included and we have seasoned logs for sale for the fire bowl (and wood burner) should you need more. We are a working smallholding with chickens, ducks and sheep, a sheepdog and two cats. We often have eggs for sale and sometimes vegetables. This is an environmentally sensitive setting - please read the section on our drainage!! It’s worth remembering that we are in a farming area which sometimes brings with it the associated sights, sounds and smells! Unfortunately we cannot allow pets due to the livestock on site – sorry!
