It is about 36,000 inhabitants, it is the second largest city in the district after Buchholz in the Nordheide and belongs to the Hamburg metropolitan region. Hamburg is 28 km away. Winsen train station is a 10-15 minute walk away. Lüneburg is also only 20 minutes away by car. Winsen has many walking paths and small lakes.
