Description

Badgers Cottage dates back to the 15th century and is reputedly the most original longhouse in Somerset. It has bags of character including wooden beams, flagstone floors, an inglenook fireplace, stone spiral stairs and two original wattle and daub walls. The mature and colourful cottage garden has plenty of interest and places to sit, eat and relax. There are pleasant walks and a wonderful 1700 year old Yew tree with an amazing full canopy in the grounds of the 14th century church nearby. The space Badgers Cottage is our much loved home, don’t expect a pristine, smooth finished barn conversion or slick holiday home. Badgers is a genuinely old cottage dating back to the 15th century. Reputedly the most original longhouse in Somerset, that originality means bags of character including uneven walls, sloping, squeaky floors, some original wattle and daub walls, lath and straw lime plastered walls and old elm beams. It is cool in the heat of summer and warm and cosy in winter if you light the fire and crank up the heating. Don’t expect matching glasses or a dinner service for ten, we’ve got odd bits and pieces and there are plenty of most things. The washing machine has seen us through raising four boys and over 25 years of loyal service and is still doing a good job. We have a dishwasher and an electric induction cooker. We're into comfortable beds and quality bedding so we hope you'll sleep well. The two single beds in the third bedroom can be put together to make a super king bed with a feather topper for extra comfort. Let us know if this is what you need and we'll set it up. We are in the countryside which means there is the occasional tractor whizzing past and once in a blue moon a flock of sheep. There always seem to be a couple of confused looking goats in amongst them, no idea why. We have feral peacocks on this side of the village so wild displays through the spring and the occasional discarded tail feather in the summer. We are in a village and life goes on around us, but overall its pretty tranquil. Badgers has loads of character with abundant hazardous features, including low doorways, uneven floors, narrow stairs, and a shiny stone spiral stairway polished by many feet since the sixteenth century. It doesn't have a bannister but there is a bell rope to help you. There is another more conventional if rather narrow stair if you prefer. The inglenook fireplace has an open fire and there is wood and kindling if you’d like to have a fire, just don't set fire to the thatch! (Its been fine for 500 years so its unlikely....) We have a large garden divided into various parts. The area near the house (about 20 metres by 25 metres) will be all yours, with a large walnut tree and an elderly Mirabelle, a table to eat at and another for coffee, a swing seat, a bench seat and a small pond. You are welcome to fruit from the garden. Separately, in the far section of the garden enclosed by a hedge, is an annexe with its own garden. Next to it is a vegetable garden with a Yurt where we will be staying. Just so you know we have a storage area in the house which is not part of the rental. We may, very occasionally, need to pop in to it although we try not to. Access is from the downstairs cross hall so we wouldn't need to come into the main house where you'll be staying. Myrtle is our cat who being a teenager treats the house as a hotel and will be in and out. You can close the cat flap but she is fast and whips in when the doors open. She is sweet and affectionate and funny, and we will feed her, but we need you to know she may be around. There is just the one bathroom which is small and full of character, with a bath, basin and WC but no shower. There is a shower hose with the bath taps and plenty of hot water. There is also an outside loo with a collection of treasures from the garden. Guest access There is parking for two cars and more space in the yard if needed. You can charge electric cars from a 13amp socket in the garage. We do not have a dedicated EV charging point but you are welcome to charge when it suits. Other things to note Some of the ceilings and doors are low so you you might need to watch your head. The smaller bedroom has a 4' 6" double bed and the room has a sloping ceiling, so it is quite low on one side of the bed. Just be careful if you go for a pee in the night...
