Description

Edgehill is a beautiful, rambling old farmhouse with a great barn. It's been our family's summer home for more than a century! The house sits on over 100 acres of woods with a pond and access to a 520 ft. beach on Eggemoggin Reach in Penobscot Bay. Sleeping up to 20 people makes it an ideal place to have large family gatherings. The ambience of the house and the beauty of its surroundings provide a relaxing and comfortable place for your vacation. The space Edgehill is within an hour's drive of Acadia National Park. Other things to note REVIEWS: We are new to airbnb so don't have reviews through this site. But, here are several reviews from past guests. Heide said Sep 20, 2016 Excellent and Authentic Maine Wedding Venue My husband and I hosted our far-flung family at Edgehill for a week in early August that culminated in our wedding celebration. People are still talking about how amazing Edgehill was as a location, and there are even hopes to return every year for a family reunion! The rambling house is big enough for everyone and gives you plenty of options for gathering in large groups or small, and even for catching some alone time when needed. Our days were full of local adventures: day trips to Acadia and Four Seasons Farm, fishing in the mill pond, hikes in the woods and along the blueberry fields, and daily walks down to the ocean for swimming, kayaking, and tidepool adventuring. We had around 17 people staying at the house and another 10 people staying at a house next door and we hosted nightly dinners at Edgehill for everyone! Having two kitchens was helpful, but the main kitchen was large enough to comfortably prep meals for the group. Our wedding ceremony was held in the woods down by the pond, and all of our guests agreed that it was a magical location. Our reception was held in the barn, with seated table service for just under 50. This was followed by a Contra dance. The setting of the barn was so charming for the party, and during the week it provided plenty of entertainment for the children and teenagers in our group (particularly the rope swing and basketball hoop). Margeret was a pleasure to correspond with, and helped us in making our stay pleasant and stress-free. While we were there there was no internet, but we hear from Margaret that this may be changing soon. While having wi-fi would have been convenient at times, we loved unplugging when there and there were no complaints from our large family - even from the very plugged-in teenagers! Margaret was kind enough to lead us to locations nearby where we could use wi-fi when needed, and this turned out to be the perfect solution. We feel so lucky that we found Edgehill for our celebration, and that it will, hopefully, be a part of future family vacations. We got married at Edgehill this August, and we couldn't have been happier with it as our venue! My husband is from Deer Isle and everyone knew Edgehill well from other events held year over the years, so we liked that historical context. We had about 20 friends from the West Coast stay at Edgehill for the entire week and it was like one big party. My friends loved it so much they want to rent it out themselves next summer. We hosted 50 people in the barn for a lobster bake rehearsal dinner, then 100 people for the wedding reception. It was a tight squeeze, but it totally worked. We had big wooden farm tables, and had to move a couple to make room for the dance floor. The barn is pretty funky and rustic, but if you bring some handy people with you, you can transform it into a magical place. We used the side barn as a bar/desserts area, and during the reception people spread out all over the porch and lawn. Having the house for the whole week made setting up for the day so much easier (as opposed to renting a venue where you only have it for a couple hours!) The backyard was a perfect venue for the ceremony, and we had our first look down by the pond. At sunset my husband and I ran down to the beach and got the perfect shot with the Deer Isle bridge in the background. Absolutely loved Edgehill as our wedding venue. Perfect if you're into the actual rustic vibe, ready to DIY, and just want a big fun week long event. My husband and rented Edgehill for our wedding week. My family absolutely loved it! They can't stop talking about their stay! 20 people stayed at the house. The kitchen was very accommodating for big family meals. My husband and I got married in the back yard and held the reception in the barn. 55 people attended the wedding and we were able to fit 8 tables in the barn. I would highly recommend this house for any family gathering! Maya said Perfect place for a fall wedding in Maine! 9/19/13 My (new) husband and I just got back from spending 10 days at Edgehill, with our entire wedding party and most of our family staying there as well! We had folks from California, North Carolina, Virginia, and Massachusetts all staying under that one roof - and it was lovely. One night we hosted a 40-person rehearsal dinner on the porch (with Maine lobsters, of course!). The next day we had our wedding ceremony in the backyard under the apple trees, with a seated dinner and dancing in the barn (with about 80 guests). We were nervous about fitting so many people in the barn, but it easily accommodated 11 8-ft tables, a sweetheart table up on the stage, the DJ's table, a dessert table, and the bar - all within the barn - with room for dancing in front of the stage! The barn could easily hold more tables, if the dance floor space was used. All of our guests were wow-ed by the property, the lovely outdoor space, the special feeling in the barn and the house-- so much to see and appreciate. The porch and outdoors offered a lot of hang-out and mingle space for guests after the wedding, so people could spread out and visit comfortably. While we weren't spending time preparing for (or recovering from!) the wedding, we visited towns on Deer Isle, found great food at El El Frijoles (also a great dessert catering option!), and explored the beach (.2 miles from the house, and gorgeous). I would highly recommend Edgehill to anyone looking for a perfect wedding venue, or just for a great family vacation locale. Oh, and did I mention the fireplace? So cozy chatting in front of the fire on those crisp fall evenings. Recommended for: Families with Young Children, Sightseeing, Romantic Getaway, Families with Teenagers. Beryl said Perfect for our fammily Aug 3, 2013 We had family travel from Oregon, Wyoming, California, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, and Maine. Everyone raved about the house. The listing description was great and we felt at home as soon as we arrived. The owner does so many things that makes everyone feel welcome. We enjoyed the mill pond, the beach, the barn, the porch, the hike along the path, the house, and all the surroundings, I would certainly recommend this property to people planning a gathering of family and/or friends. We also hiked Blue Hill, went to Acadia National Park, Stonington, the Rockefeller gardens on MDI, the Brooklin boat yard, and picked lots of blueberries on my son's property. We enjoyed having a meal catered by Frank Bianco; the lobster bake was wonderful. This was the best vacation I have had in years! Jeff said Great time for family reunion Aug 27, 2012 Our Family of 10 adults and 5 kids spent a week and had a great time. Swimming in the mill pond, searching the flats at low tide, playing in the barn, the kids had plenty to do. Its a beautiful old farm house, warm and inviting, plenty of space for everyone. I highly recommend. Recommended for: Families with Young Children, Girls Getaway, Age 55+, Families with Teenagers. My Response It is always such a pleasure to have people stay at Edgehill who love the place as much as our family does. The ambiance of our rambling house invites guests to relax and enjoy the quiet and beauty of downeast Maine. The Blue HiIl peninsula area also offers many things to do: art galleries, music performances, theater productions, craft and gift shops, and restaurants are just a few of the many things you and your family and friends can enjoy while staying here. Hiking, swimming, sailing, tennis, golf, kayaking ... the list goes on. So, whether you want to be out and about or simply sit on the porch or by the fireplace with a good book, Edgehill is a great place to stay.
