The lodge sits on 2 hectares of beachfront land, known as Plengkung Beach and is surrounded by 55.000 hectares of tropical rainforest. The Alas Purwo National Park is a truly amazing location, with is spectacular un-spoilt white sandy beaches, where on any given day the only foot prints found on the beaches are of the wildlife for which the park provides sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to an abundance of flora and fauna, and over 300 recorded species of bird-life. The flora protected in the national park include, Terminalia catappa, Calophyllum inophyllum, Sterculia foetida, Barringtonia asiatica and Manilkara kauki, In Java, Manilkara kauki is called sawo kacik, and is associated with a royal Javanese ritual. It is also sanctuary to some of Java’s most endangered species, such as the banteng (Bos javanicus), the dhole, Javan langur, green peafowl, red junglefowl, olive ridley, hawksbill turtle and green turtle. Rusa deer (Cervus timorensis russa), panther (Panthera pardus), and leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis javanensis) also find sanctuary. The communities living around Alas Purwo National Park are typical of the "Blambangan" culture. They believe that what is now the Alas Purwo National Park, was the last stopover of the Majapahit people who were escaping the onslaught of the Mataram kingdom, and believe hidden somewhere in the park is a sacred kris, or dagger, named "Keris Pusaka Sumelang Gandring". The park is renowned as a spiritual scared destination to meditate or hold religious ceremonies, particularly in Goa Padepokan, Goa Istana and Giri Seloka temple (Pura Luhur Giri Seloka). Located near the entrance gate there are historical remains in the form of "Pura Agung", a Hindu temple, where a Hindu ceremony, "Pagerwesi", is held every 210 days.
