Access to the property is through a locked gate. Only registered guests are allowed on the property. The staff at the House on Metolius is available to answer questions, although we generally like to let our guests relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. House on Metolius is about 2h30m from Portland, 45m from Redmond airpot (RDM), and 25m from Sisters. Due to the potential for conflict with wildlife, we do not allow pets on the property at House on Metolius. House on Metolius is located in a forested area, and many of the structures are wooden cabins, so fire hazard is something that we take very seriously. No smoking is allowed inside any of the buildings, and we ask that guests also avoid smoking in the surrounding forested areas. Smoking is allowed outside, but must be at least ten feet from public facilities, lodges and other facilities. Smoking in a guest room or building will incur an automatic damage and cleaning fee of $250. The Metolius River is fly-fishing only on this stretch of river. Equipment, flies and fishing licenses can be obtained at the nearby Camp Sherman store, or let us arrange for a full or half day of guided fishing on the property (please give us a few days advance notice to make sure that one of our guides is available). Internet and Cell Coverage The Metolius Basin has very limited cell coverage—you’ll typically get one or two bars, and occasionally no coverage at all. Text messages generally work with only one bar, so that is a good option. You can also use WiFi calling when you are on the property. The Internet connection here at House on Metolius is also somewhat limited, certainly compared to the average 80-90 Mbps connection one sees many places. We are limited (by the telephone company) to a single T1 line for the entire property—that is 1.5 Mbps up/down. The WiFi coverage is good around all of the cabins and at the Main House, so if you are having trouble, the problem probably isn’t the WiFi, but rather simply that Internet connection isn’t that fast, and there may be other guests using it at the same time. Perhaps surprisingly, this is usually good enough for many applications—even video calls, screen sharing, etc. It isn’t great for streaming movies (or downloading large updates), so if you may want to download those in advance and bring them with you. On the whole, our guests usually find that there are a lot of ‘offline’ things to enjoy here at House on Metolius—this is definitely a nice place to curl up with a good book or simply enjoy the view.
