Other things to note If you are interested in tourism, you have chosen the best city! The first thing to do would be to visit our Plaza Mayor and enjoy the colour of its stone, which varies according to the brightness of the sun. Along Calle del Prior, see the Renaissance Palace of Monterrey (owned by the Duke of Alba) and the Church of La Purísima, where you will find the largest mural of the Virgin Mary, painted by José Ribera. Next, stroll along Calle de la Compañía, which owes its name to the fact that in the 17th century, the Jesuits were located there (the setting for many medieval films) and a route for tourists and students. There you can also admire the Church of San Benito (look out for the figure of the "tuno" in bas-relief), the Pontifical University, the Clerecía, the Casa de las Conchas (which until recently was the private property of the Junta de Andalucía). Continuing along Calle Libreros (where the Silver Route once passed), we arrive at the University (on its façade, try to find the famous "frog" which, according to tradition, will bring good luck to whoever finds it). Behind the statue of Fray Luis de León is the Patio de las Escuelas Mayores, and off to the right is the Casa rectoral de Unamúno. Along Calle Calderón de la Barca, we come to the Cathedrals: in the New Cathedral, look for the astronaut in the bas-relief, and from the tower of the Old Cathedral we must not miss the climb up to the New Cathedral to see "Ieronimus". Opposite the Old Cathedral is the municipal museum, from where Francisco Franco once directed the Civil War. Going down Tentenecio street, we will see on the left side the Archive of the Civil War, and then, we will find the entrance of the Museum of the Casa de Lís (Museum of ART NOUVEAU and ART DÉCO.) Following the route, we will be able to see the Torre del Gallo of the Old Cathedral, and on the right, the Garden of Calisto and Melibea, (described in the play "La Celestina", by Fernándo de Rojas.) Further down, we find the Cueva de Salamanca, where, according to tradition, the devil taught. ....... and if we continue down, we reach the Calle de San Pablo, where we are surprised by the Convent of San Esteban (occupied by the Dominican Fathers) where Columbus presented his plan for his voyage to America to Fray Diego de Deza, favourite of Queen Isabella the Catholic. Next to it, the Convent of Las Dueñas, and a little further back, the Calatrava College, founded by the Military Order of Calatrava. If you continue down to the river, you can visit the Automobile Museum, and in front of it, the Cross of the Fallen, where the condemned were executed in the Middle Ages. We will also find the beautiful Roman Bridge, the figure of the Headless Bull and the statue of Lazarillo de Tormes. All these monuments are illuminated at night, and offer a very different image of Salamanca that you should not miss. In the Plaza Mayor you will find the tourist office, where you can get information and brochures. However, when you arrive, we will give you a map of the city and give you a small summary of the gastronomic and leisure activities that the city has to offer. During check-in, we will present you with a mini-guide of, in our opinion, the best and most popular restaurants and tapas bars (quality/price) where you can go.
