The space Tombuie is equidistant from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and both east and west coasts (1.5 hrs in all directions): ideally located to explore Scotland. Tombuie is also ideal for kids: they won´t get bored with such a large space to run around and the fresh highland air will make sure they sleep well. Get them away from the consoles: locally there are opportunities for mountain biking, canoeing, water trampolining, hill walking and rafting. Guided trips with a wildlife guide available on request. The Aberfeldy distillery is just over the river and well worth a visit, and Encochdu, the world's smallest distillery is a short drive away. The bronze age Crannog on Loch Tay is a fun family experience. Nearby castles worth visiting are Castle Menzies, Blair Castle and the still lived-in Scone Palace. A great place from which to do a number of routes into the glens and along the remote lochs of the southern Highlands. Glen Lyon is just twenty minutes from Tombuie- a memorable drive up it and over the pass at ben Lawers overlooking Loch Tay. Tombuie is an hour's drive from the famous Glencoe and 1.5 hours from Oban and the west coast. For Monroe-baggers, Tombuie is close to Schiechallion, the Ben Lawers and Glen Lyon ranges. The garden at Tombuie is beautifully stocked with roses, herbs and shrubs set amongst traditional dry-stone walls and terraces to make the most of the view. Guests have free use of the garden and plantations surrounding the house. The latter have mown paths and interesting mix of rare trees and native woodland, perfect for an evening or early morning walk. Below the house is the river Tay and guests can also walk down to the river and get to know their surroundings. There are well-stocked bird feeders in the garden that attract Red Squirrel, woodpeckers, japs and many others. Guests can also see some semi-wild Red Deer in the quieter corners. Perthshire is Big Tree Country- famous for its huge old trees and magnificent forests. For plant lovers, four species of wild orchid and their hybrids can be seen at Tombuie in June and July, and there are eight species at the nearby Keltneyburn SWT reserve. The Ben Lawers reserve, the UK's foremost botanical reserve, is half an hour's drive away, best visited June-Sept. You can hear Oystercatchers calling at night in spring, Salmon sploshing in the river over the summer, and the Red Deer rut in the autumn from your bedroom window. Northern Lights can sometimes be seen nearby on clear spring nights looking north. Aberfeldy is just 3 minutes' drive from the house and has a well-stocked supermarket (closes at 11pm), a bakery selling excellent freshly baked fare, several good restaurants, a chippie and a renowned bookshop/ café. The newly refurbished art deco Birks Cinema in Aberfeldy is great for rainy days, has up-to-date-films as well as classics for the whole family. There is an excellent bar/ cafeteria, too. It's worth visiting off-season too: we have a spectacular splash of Autumn colours in October and early November. And in February we are sometimes graced with sunny, calm weather, being south-facing we get more light and less chill in the winter months. Half term or Easter visits can be loads of fun for the family. In spring, the garden bulbs and blossoms are a marvellous sight. At these times of year we are open to offering guests discounts, particularly if they have smaller group sizes. Guest access All areas of the house are accessible apart from a small office and a cupboard on the ground floor. A back door can be opened into a small storage room for guests who would like to use the tumble dryer. Other things to note Tombuie has submitted an application to the Perth and Kinross council (Provisional code: FS-Case-498843350) as of September 21st 2023, to become an acrredited property offering Short Term Lets. We have updated all fire safety, electrical appliance and outlet safety and water safety norms as part of the process. More information can be found displayed in the study room on the ground floor of the house, where there are also clip folders containing all recommendation and documentation. Spring and even summer temperatures can get chilly. It's best to bring warm clothing and waterproofs at any time of year. We can help with some extra jackets and scarves on loan if it gets really cold. Wellie boots are also a good idea (we maay have some for loan in large and small sizes on request), but hiking boots or strong trainers for walking should be fine, too. The house is situated on a hillside and the access drive (about 1km long) is steepish in places. Drive slowly in a low gear.
