Our home is on the side of a private mountain sitting at about 1300 feet in elevation. It's quaint nature fits in perfectly with its surroundings. The best part: there is a brook that runs by cabin, right through our backyard. It is great place for a mild hike, leisurely snowshoe or an unmatched nap. It is a true log cabin in and out with a rustic and extremely cozy feel. With access to the entire mountain, our property alone is 11 acres. There are many neighboring Sugar Houses down the road that will be making maple syrup in March and April and are fun to visit. We live full time in Rhode Island, so none. What we love most is that it is remote. While we have fabulous neighbors, it is also a great place to retreat and find seclusion. The town of Sandgate is 20 minutes from Manchester, 25 minutes from Bromley Ski mountain, and 45 minutes from Saratoga Springs. THINGS TO DO: Pick up a “Vermont News Guide” upon arrival, there are pancake breakfasts as well as various dinner fundraisers by many of the local fire departments, fish and game clubs and granges. Restaurant Suggestions: The Barn: Pawlet, Rt 30. Rustic old barn. Every entrée is $13.00 and the food is good considering the price. About 20 minute drive. $ The Station: Pawlet- Awesome for breakfast $ Old Brian Inn: Saratoga Springs, very good food in old English pub style $$. About 50 minutes’ drive. The Dorset Inn: Dorset- Excellent food and environment. American $$$. 15 minutes away. Mulligan’s: Manchester – Sports Bar. $$ Chanteclair – Splurge. One of the best restaurants we have ever eaten in. Manchester Rt. 7a $$$$ Northshire Bookstore – Manchester, great old bookstore with deli Al Ducci’s – Italian Deli, Depot Street, Manchester $ Things To Do: Riley Ice Rink- Rt. 7a Manchester Chocolatorium- Arlington, kids can build stuff with chocolate. Norman Rockwell’s House is in Arlington and studio in side yard, although it is a Bed and Breakfast now off of Rt. 313 near Battenkill Grange. Skiing- Bromley is the closest Mountain; Stratton is second closest. Equinox Snow Tours – Snowmobiling at the base of Bromley. The Vermont Country Store – Rt. 100 Weston, about 50 minutes Sugaring – There are two sugar houses in West Rupert; Axel Bloomberg and Michael Lourie (Just east of Sherman’s store on the south side of Rt. 153). If you see steam (February and March) make sure you visit and watch them boil the maple syrup. They encourage visits, especially kids. You can buy your syrup here at about 60% of retail (year around). Orvis Flagship Store – Manchester Rt. 7a Battenkill Creamery – Homemade ice cream and fresh coffee milk. 153 west through Salem to Rt. 30. About 20 minutes. Farmers Market (Sunday) – Dorset. Next to the Williams General Store in summer, and inside the JK Adams factory in winter. Sundays only Rt. 30 Dorset. Tour Rupert Valley Holsteins – Dairy Farm. Horse Racing – Summer (July-September); thoroughbred (7 weeks – last week in July to second weekend in September) and harness racing in Saratoga Springs at the "racino". Sledding – Contact Skip about locations. General Stores-stop in to as many as you can, they are a fading enterprise in the United States.) Hike (Summer) Snowshoe (Winter)-There are all sizes in the first bay of the garage. There are trails going west up the mountain, follow the brook back if you get lost. Swimming-Dorset marble quarry is awesome (15 minutes on Rt 30). The Northshire Bookstore (Manchester)- Great old time bookstore with a terrific deli and coffee. Gardenworks Farm (1055 County Rte. 30, Salem, NY)- Vegetables, Cakes, Cheeses, Jams, Pies. Handcrafted gift and holiday barn. Café and farm to table dinners (call for dates). RS Taylor Brewery (3602 Rte. 30, Salem, NY )- Craft beer and tap room. I recommend all-wheel drive in winter. Great horse racing in summer, the property is 45 minutes away in Saratoga Springs. Awesome Marble Quarry for swimming in Dorset Great Shopping at Outlet Stores in Manchester. Craft Breweries near by. Artisan Farms produce vegetables, meats, cheeses, jams, pies, maple syrup and of course, milk.
