The space The DAMAI BAYU cottage, a 100 year old Langkawi Farmers’ cottage inspired by Malay fishermen homes, has been lovingly redesigned and refurbished to include a large wrap around verandah often seen in Malay fishermen homes along the coastal areas of Malaysia. The verandah is the feature of this cottage offering a large, open, raised and covered outdoor living space for you to relax and enjoy the surrounding natural environment. We are are still surrounded by farmland and our 1.25 acre gardens are landscaped and planted with various fruit trees, wild local berry bushes & tropical fragrant flowers. As we have retained the old naturally grown local berry trees, our land is a sanctuary & pitstop for migratory birds, fruit bats, squirrels, flying foxes, hornbills & the elusive colugo amongst other wildlife. We also have a few very friendly family cats that roam free who help hunt & cull critters on our grounds. If you love places with natural environment & want to experience a slice of life living in a farming/fishing village in rural northern Malaysia this is the place for you. Daily daytime rural life noises of farmers working & tending their lands, children playing, the distant call to prayer from the mosque within the village, neighbouring farm animals including the unique sounds of the shy and gentle Water buffaloes are to be expected; embrace it as part of the unique localised experience! Although it can be very quiet at night, do expect sounds of nocturnal wildlife & some animal activities. The windows have all been screened (mosquito netting) to allow you to sleep with the windows open. We also provide complimentary use of insect repellent for both body and environment and mosquito coils for the outdoor areas. The Damai Bayu cottage also has a fully equipped kitchen with electric kettle, toaster, blender, microwave, fridge, gas stove & utensils. You will find upon check-in that the cottage is stocked with compliments; 1 loaf of bread, cooking oil, salt, sugar, black pepper, 1 bottle of filtered drinking water, 1 bottle of mango cordial, coffee & tea. Kedawang Supermarket, Billion Supermarket & Eco-Fresh about 5 minutes away from our place TERATAK DAMAI LANGKAWI by scooter or car is where you can shop for vegetables, milk and various groceries. Cemara Pharmacy an easy 5 minute ride by scooter or car from our place next to Cenang Supermarket is where you can find high SPF, up to 130SPF Sunscreen, personal insect repellent and other medication. The Petrol/Gas station PETRONAS Kedawang is located about 3 minutes away by car or scooter from our place. A local area map is available in your cottage marked with all the village sights, various local warungs which sell local food, savoury and sweet desserts made by women in the surrounding villages and the locally famous Pak Long Sate about 2 minutes by scooter or 15 minute stroll from our place within the village open daily in the evenings. Cenang beach is an easy 5 minutes ride by scooter or car away about 2.5km from our place. GRAB car is easily available on the island for those without transport, however hiring your own scooter or small car is the recommended best way to travel around the island for those with adventure in their hearts and a love of exploring a rural island. Guest access Guests have access to the garden & grounds. The RUMAH IBU where our kitchen & work area are & the gardens behind are Strictly for Family Only. Other things to note Things to note while on the tropical island of Langkawi. WHAT TO EXPECT Langkawi although an international destination, is still part of rural Malaysia surrounded by lush vegetation, rural farmlands and a Geopark and therein lies it’s charm. Wildlife, bugs, farm animals are a part of life here on the island, embrace the experience! It is a UNESCO Geopark and although larger than the neighbouring Penang island, is less developed and lacks the infrastructure of urban areas. The island is perfect for those wanting a slower pace of life to rest and explore at a leisurely pace. We recommend you stay a minimum of 3 nights on the island to enjoy Langkawi without feeling rushed. Nature based activities like kayaking, zip-line, rain-forest canopy adventures, jungle night walks, mangrove, snorkelling, hiking, bicycle, jet-ski and sunset are a plenty on the island. Brochures available in your cottage and at our RUMAH IBU Reception. Langkawi is also a Duty Free island where imported chocolates and alcohol are duty-free. You are however limited to bringing back with you 1 litre bottle of alcohol and 1 carton of cigarettes per traveller who have stayed a minimum of 3 nights on the island. Please retain your flight arrival & departure tickets as proof of stay to Airport Customs to enjoy the duty-free shopping. Massages are easily available at various budgets on the island. Enjoy a relaxing massage while on the island! WHAT TO PACK Please pack light, loose cotton clothing, swimwear, flip-flops, aqua shoes, wet bags, chargers, international adaptors etc. High SPF sunblock up to 130SPF is available at CEMARA PHARMACY next to Cenang Supermarket 5 minutes away by scooter from our place. They are open daily from 10am-10pm. WEATHER The weather is generally divided into hot, dry & windy and the monsoon season with high humidity where it rains most days. For a more accurate weather update, please check online for weather conditions in Langkawi for your intended travel period. AIRPORT We are 15 minutes away by car from Langkawi International Airport. KUAH JETTY We are 30 minutes by car away from Kuah jetty. TELAGA HARBOUR JETTY We are 20 minutes by car away from Telega Harbour jetty.
