The house is less than a mile from the shops and restaurants of beautiful Bronxville. The neighborhood is quiet, safe, and friendly. Some residents have lived 40+yrs in the surrounding, beautiful homes from the 1800s to the mid 1900s. There is a tranquil front yard view of the park across the street with children playing ball and couples strolling or walking dogs. There is little street traffic as we are the only house on our block. Neighboring homes face side streets. It is a 10 min walk into our town of Fleetwood for a well stocked Harvest Market grocery, CVS, PO, banks, shopping, and restaurants. The Metro North Fleetwood train station is a 12-minute walk. It is a 25 min train ride south to NYC (Grand Central Station) or north into upper Westchester and the Hudson Valley, where you will find nearby cultural points of interest, historical sights, art museums, outdoor sculpture parks, and galleries. There is quick, easy access to seven major highways running N,W,E & S, including a 25 min car ride or Uber to mid-town Manhattan. Travel by car is easy with quick access to all major north/south and east/west highways to shopping, restaurants and movie theaters. The bus in town is on Gramatan Avenue and is a 10 min walk. The Metro North train station south into NYC or north to neighboring northern Westchester towns is a 13 min walk. Biking around the neighborhood is easy. Explore Fleetwood, a charming community The New York Times called the “best-kept secret in Westchester County.” Quiet nights, a safe area, and beautiful homes abound on tree-lined streets. This suburb in Mount Vernon, NY, is a hidden paradise and a hop, skip, & jump from NYC. Poised on New York City's northern border, Mount Vernon offers quick commuter rail access to NYC and a location between two parkways for easy drives to Westchester County's dining and shopping destinations The location can’t be beat. It is very convenient to the city and points north. The community is caring and close-knit. Fleetwood covers about one and a half square miles and has a population of fewer than 20,000. Good neighbors who own bars, run coffee businesses, and produce television shows are all pleasantly social. A nice, small restaurant scene  draws people from around the county in a compact and cute but unpretentious Westchester style shopping district (Gramatan/Broad/Grand).  Generally considered the most affluent section of Mount Vernon, Fleetwood is not easy to characterize broadly. At the southern end is an array of Arts and Crafts bungalows, Dutch colonial-style homes, and midcentury Capes. Co-ops, with Tudor facades, are tucked here and there. On the north end, single-family homes sit on larger lots, and some neighborhoods end in hushed cul-de-sacs.  Most of Fleetwood is within a 15-20 minute walk of the entirety of Bronxville, which is one of the wealthiest and toniest suburbs of NYC. It has great shops and boutiques. The streets surrounding our home are dotted with the unique architecture of 1800's Victorians, Prewar Tudors, 1920s brick Estates, Mediterranean, Raised Ranches, and Postwar Colonial single family homes. It is hard to tell where Fleetwood ends and the village of Bronxville begins. SOME HISTORY Mount Vernon has a rich historical significance, dating back to the Revolutionary War. Saint Paul’s Church served as a military hospital for the British Army. The Battle of Pell’s Point was fought less than a mile from Saint Paul’s, and as the fighting came closer to the church, George Washington was worried the British would melt down the church’s bell and turn its metal into bullets. He ordered the parishioners to bury the bell. The bell remains intact to this day, and Saint Paul’s Church is now a National Historic Site.   Today, Mount Vernon is an eclectic community that has carved out professional niches in technology, manufacturing, metal working, and beyond. And its leafy Fleetwood neighborhood brings you the best of all worlds, with its idyllic feel, proximity to New York City, and thriving small-business scene.  LOCATION Mount Vernon, NY in Westchester County is just north of the Bronx and the northernmost borough of New York City. It is still considered an inner suburb of the city—as opposed to the leafy hamlets, villages, and towns that populate the rest of Westchester County. The south side of Mount Vernon is closer to the Bronx in geography and more urban in look and feel. It also includes the civic and commercial districts. The northern part of the cit (Fleetwood) is largely residential with small shops and eateries.  While the city of over 68,500 residents is named for the plantation in the state of Virginia where George Washington spent much of his life, he was never a resident of New York’s Mount Vernon. But some other notable people were, including David Chase, screenwriter; Denzel Washington, actor; Michael O’Keefe, actor; Sidney Poitier, actor; Al Skinner, basketball player and coach; Ken Singleton, baseball player; Art Carney, actor; Dick Clark, master of many ceremonies and creator of TV’s American Bandstand in the late 1950s; Charles Lewis Bowman, architect; E. B. White, writer, essayist, and author of Charlotte’s Web, among other beloved books; and Heavy D, the rapper. COMMUTE Mount Vernon is easy to get to from Manhattan. The city has three Metro-North Railroad stations. Fleetwood and Mount Vernon West train stations are on the Harlem Line, with commutes of about 40 minutes into Midtown. Mount Vernon East is on the New Haven Line and gets to Grand Central Terminal in about 30 minutes. As owners, our home is available while we are living aboard our sailboat. We normally sail in the summer: The Long Island Sound, Block Island, Newport, Boston, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and other Northeast ports. In the winter, we are away sailing the entire Caribbean Island chain but are always accessible. Our house manager lives across the street, and our co-host is on the App Message thread. *For a Film Shoot, please see our separate listing for the house with rules & requirements.
