Taitung was developed by the Japanese in the early part of the 20th Century and were responsible for both the construction the road and railroad to the area. This in turn brought an influx of Taiwanese settlers into the area that already had several aboriginal groups, creating a diverse city of aboriginal, Hakka, and Hoklo populations. Getting in By train, Taitung is on the main East Coast express route. The journey from Taipei takes about five and a half hours to seven and a half hours depends on the type of trains you take. From Kaohsiung to Taitung on the Southern route the trip takes from just over two hours to a little over three hours depending on the type train. By plane, Taitung is serviced by a local airport with flights to Taipei and Kaohsiung. Green Island Besides one of only 3 saltwater hot springs in the world , Green Island has some decent snorkeling and scuba. The sites along the north side feature mostly hard corals while the southern sites feature mostly soft corals. The north side is home to many species of nudibranchs and several species of pygmy seahorses. The ferry to Green Island heads from Taitung's Fu Gang harbor to Green Island before heading to Orchid Island. Tickets are NT$920 round trip. The trip lasts about an hour.
