Description
I am Katsuya. Thank you for looking at my traditional Kyoto machiya style house. Year by year, these kinds of traditional houses are decreasing even in Kyoto. That is why I decided to renovate this Japanese traditional house as guest house as I hope to preserve. This Kyoto style Machiya was built in 1943 using the traditional construction method. It is made of natural materials such as wood, bamboo, paper and clay. The space Vertical pillars of the house stand on foundation stones called “Tsuka-ishi” which sustain the whole house. There are several holes in vertical pillars, and horizontal pillars which is called “Nuki” pass through vertical pillars to fasten all the pillars. This wall is made of clay with “Takekomai” Takekomai is bamboo sticks woven between Nuki to form lattice shape. At last, clay is painted over this Takekomai to make wall. When the house was renovated, I left some part of the clay wall uncovered to show the Kyoto traditional way of building house. I asked to those artists who I respect to make calligraphy, picture and flower arrangement for this house. All of them are fantastic and I’m sure these works will please you.
