Description
Carefully restored village stone house on two floors, part of an original last century Cretan farming family home. The Patio house has complete privacy with its own entrance, blossoming terrace, outside garden area as well as a common fruit and vegetable grove and a large BBQ & sitting area. The view is unspoiled and overlooks the olive grove valley down to the sea. The space A carefully restored two-story stone house, part of an original Cretan farmhouse from the last century, divided into 4 independent houses immersed in a large terraced garden, on the edge of the village of Agios Ioannis. The village enjoys an extraordinary location overlooking the Libyan Sea, with a stream of spring water on one side and a protective ridge on the other, perched on Mount Tripti at 600 meters above sea level. The landscape is pristine, a valley of olive trees overlooking the sea, with no middle ground. The altitude keeps it naturally cool and breezy during the summer months. The village was almost abandoned in the 1970s and 1980s by local farmers who descended on the coast for new greenhouses and other opportunities. In the early 1990s, a group of foreign friends began to buy some houses and renovate them according to local aesthetics, planting gardens to cover the ruins. One friend called another, and several descendants of the former owners returned to continue the reconstruction. Even today, the village retains its calm and silence, and the contact with the extraordinary Mediterranean nature that can be felt everywhere. Several areas of the village are still in ruins, but restored and ancient blend harmoniously, without artificiality. We have owned the houses, the Patio House and the Jasmine House, as well as the ones we use personally, for 30 years and every year we appreciate more and more the intrinsic quality of a place like this. The house is livable all year round thanks to the mild climate, although it can sometimes snow, a unique experience of bright colors, between the white of the snow and the blue of the sky and the sea, with the oranges full of life. Out of season, much of the hiking and nature walks can always be enjoyed in the peaceful harmony that is the true treasure of this island and its hidden gems such as this village. The atmosphere is very different from the small island villages, which are very crowded in summer and deserted in winter. In Crete, life flows all year round at its own pace and is always a welcome adventure. The village is quiet, away from traffic and no cars are allowed inside. Local activities are concentrated around the only tavern, with local farmers taking care of their vineyards and olive trees or villagers repairing, whitewashing their homes or simply enjoying a moment of rest. From the village: Many trails start from the village, descending along the valley to the coast or ascending the mountain to the top of Tripti, Monastiraki or many other villages. The famous E4 hiking trail is located right behind the village. The equipped or wild beaches are only 9 km away and are easily accessible. Agios Ioannis is the perfect choice for a holiday dedicated to nature and relaxation, combining relaxing days on the beach and in crystal clear waters with the wild nature and beauty of the Mediterranean mountains and the rural environment with its beautiful aromatic vegetation. From the village you can reach all the southeastern and western ends of the island for day trips. We will always provide you with an up-to-date list of what to see and where to go to make your trip the best. Many excellent restaurants and shops of all kinds are located on the coast 9 km away or in Ierapetra 15 km away.
