Accommodating 8, it contains 4 large bedrooms and 4 bathrooms with all modern conveniences. The space Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Nuwara Eliya, Hylands is the ideal holiday house that can accommodate up to 8 adults. Built in 1903 by a German gentleman who called it Neroburg, after a hill in Germany, it was sold in 1927 to Sir Ernest De Silva, and has since remained in the family. Hylands, has been lovingly restored retaining its colonial features and yesteryear charm. The house includes a grand oak staircase, separate dining and living rooms, and a balcony which provides a beautiful setting for afternoon tea. The upstairs consists of a beautiful main bedroom with an ensuite, and two large double bedrooms with a common bathroom. The landing occupies a quaint single bedroom while the ground floor has another ensuite double bedroom as well as a separate bathroom. Every room in the house features original fireplaces and paneling, although for safety reasons they are no longer in use. There is a pantry which is equipped with modern conveniences but the main kitchen still maintains its old log stove which is ideal for slow cooked curries. Affectionately referred to as "Little England", Nuwara Eliya is situated at an elevation of over 6,000 feet, resulting in a climate comparable to summertime Europe. The house has the advantage of being elevated and enjoys a view of the Pedro mountain range. The tiered garden is a delight and has in the past, been awarded first place at the Nuwara Eliya Flower Show. Boasting many different flowering plants and trees it is also a paradise for bird lovers with many different species including rare migratory birds being spotted in the garden. Despite its central location, once you enter the property it is easy to feel you are in a place of seclusion, away from the hustle and bustle of the town, and in a place where you are able to enjoy the serenity of the Nuwara Eliya of yesteryear. Complete with amenities such as hot water and heat lamps in the bathrooms, Hylands also has a range of excellent attractions within walking distance of the property. The Nuwara Eliya Golf Course, Lake Gregory with its walking / bike tracks as well as water sport activities, the Nuwara Eliya botanical gardens (Victoria Park) and the Nuwara Eliya town, where you will find a multitude of shops, restaurants and pubs are only a short walk away while Hortain Plains, Hakgala Botanical Gardens, and Pedro, the tallest Mountain in Sri Lanka are all a short drive away. Pedro also has a tea factory which is worth visiting as well as a great hiking track which takes you to a spot called Lover's leap which offers spectacular views. The Nanuoya train station is a 15 minute drive away. The real beauty of a stay at Hylands, is that it provides you with a glimpse into the history and heritage of a bygone era in Sri Lanka. The house is an ideal base to explore the delights of the hill country throughout the year and is an ideal venue to come to escape, relax, and unwind for a weekend, mid-week or ideally a longer stay. Guest access Guests will have access to the entire bungalow except for the kitchen and service quarters located at the back of the property where the caretaker and staff reside. The kitchen is also located at the back of the house but guests will have access to the pantry which is behind the dinning room.
