Description

An idyllic cob and thatch cottage with its own 1-acre meadow and real-ale micro brewery onsite. Meadow Cottage is a private self-contained wing at Westacott Barton, a medieval open hall house (listed Grade II* with Historic England), dating back over 600 years and today set within 22 acres of stunning countryside. Perfectly located right in the centre of Devon near the small town of North Tawton. Stunning beaches are within a 1 hour drive. Access onto Dartmoor is nearby. The space Set in a rural farming landscape rich in heritage, head off grid and escape busy day-to-day life. Our cottage is steeped in historical features and somewhat off the beaten track, offering you the opportunity to enjoy walking, relaxing and reconnecting with nature. Ideally suited for couples or families with older children. Ground Floor - Entrance hall: with terracotta floor, hooks for coats and space for wellies. - Bathroom: tiled wetroom with rain shower, sink and toilet. - Master bedroom: with Kingsize bed, Freeview TV, wardrobe, beams. Wooden stairs lead up to First Floor - Living/dining room: with vaulted beamed ceilings under thatch, Freeview TV, DVD player, selection of books and games. - Kitchen: with electric cooker, hob, microwave, fridge, DAB/Bluetooth radio. - Bedroom 2: with full sized bunk beds. A cot for infants is available on request. Immediately outside the cottage is a courtyard area for parking; with seating, picnic bench and covered worktop with gas BBQ grill, making it super easy to enjoy an outside meal. The utility room is accessed off the courtyard and includes a sink with hot and cold water, washing machine, deck chairs, bins and recycling. One dog is most welcome along but canine comfort is slightly compromised as we have wooden stairs and floors, and we ask that dogs do not climb on beds or sofas. You should be able to pick up the Wifi in all rooms, although internet speeds are a little slower in rural Devon than you might be used to; 4G reception is usually pretty good. The 1-acre meadow is a short walk from the cottage and is the perfect place to relax in a deck chair in the sun. The meadow is fenced and secure, and is your own private space with a picnic bench and rustic swing seat. In the evening, you can light the firepit and snuggle up in the copse of oak trees. You'll probably hear the resident owl and see shooting stars. Guest access Westacott Barton is also home to Taw Valley Brewery, our family run micro brewery specialising in traditional English Ales. Guests are welcome to drop in for a complimentary 'Taw & Taste' and our bottled ales are available for sale. Or join us for a few cask ales at our brewery tap room in the barn, open most Saturdays between 3-6pm during the summer. In addition to enjoying your own private meadow, guests can explore the wider grounds at Westacott Barton, which includes areas of rewilded woodland, streams and open farmland with views across Dartmoor. Other things to note Meadow Cottage is perfectly located for exploring the wilds of Dartmoor National Park. Walk along the old railway to Meldon Reservoir, stop off at nearby National Trust Castle Drogo, explore the footpaths and woodland around Fingle Bridge, or hike Lydford Gorge. Chagford is easy to reach and a lovely old town to wander around. Towards the coast there are many fine beaches and coves including Saunton, Widemouth, Woolacombe and Westward Ho! A trip to Lundy Island can be arranged from Bideford pier. There are numerous places of interest close by including the R.H.S. gardens at Rosemoor, Dartington Crystal and the historic fishing village at Clovelly. There is golf at Okehampton and Ashbury, or you can hire a bike and cycle the Tarka Trail at Great Torrington. The nearby towns of Okehampton and Crediton offer a range of independent shops and major supermarkets. There are lots of excellent independent pubs within a short drive, some of whom might even be serving our ale.
