A 15 minutes bus ride will take you into the city centre to the Cathedral, Uffizi, Ponte Vecchio ... Guest access The Strozzi family were second only to the Medici in Renaissance Florence. Just to show they were "big cheeses" in the 15th century, they built their intentionally imposing Palazzo Strozzi on Via de' Tornabuoni, the smartest shopping street in the centre of Florence. This was their town house. Their country house was built at Settignano, a mere 5 km from the city centre in what was then open country. The villa now sits in its own estate, peaceful and serene, continuing to keep the vulgar world at bay. Other things to note the village of Settignano: this hamlet was the birthplace of several sculptors of the Florentine Renaissance, such as Desiderio da Settignano and the brothers Bernardo, Antonio and Giovanni Rossellino. In 1898 Gabriele d'Annunzio bought the 14th-century Villa della Capponcina to be closer to his lover Eleonora Duse at Villa Porziuncola. In c. 1430 Luca Fancelli, a famous architect in the service of Marquis Ludovico III Gonzaga of Mantua, was born there. The young Michelangelo lived with a sculptor and his wife in Settignano - in a farmhouse known today as "Villa Michelangelo." In 1511 another sculptor, Bartolomeo Ammannati, was born there. In 1893 Mark Twain stayed there, at Villa Viviani. 300 meters from the Settignano square are Villa Gamberaia, a 14th-century villa famous for its 18th-century terraced gardens, and the more secluded Villa I Tatti, owned by Bernard Berenson, which has become a center for art history studies run by Harvard University. Now immersed in the environs of Florence, the area offers characteristic landscapes of rolling hills dotted with olive groves and clusters of cypress trees surrounding the many historic villas built on its hillside. Settignano has always been considered the ideal place for periods of rest, study and meditation. It is also rich in art, nature and trekking routes. In addition to visiting Florence, there are many walks that can be taken in Settignano or in the vicinity of Fiesole, walks of particular beauty (and with beautiful views of the city).
