Information about Podil and its stone structures is contained in ancient chronicles, in the “Word on Igor's Regiment”, the names of the streets - Khoriva, Schekavitskaya, Borisoglebskaya, Igorevskaya, Voloshskaya, Bratskaya also testify to the antiquity of Podil. In the time of Kievan Rus, Podil and its quarters Gonchary, Kozhemyaki, Degtyari were the trade and craft center of Kiev, the mouth of the Pochain River served as a harbor, the river is one of the routes from the Varangians to the Greeks. Podil had a line of fortifications that ran along the Glubochitsa River - now these are Nizhny and Upper Val Streets. The center of Podil was Torzhische - today it is Kontraktova Square. Intensive development of Podil unfolded in the 17th century, and since 1797 annual contract fairs have been held in Podil. In 1811, a fire occurred on Podil, which dramatically changed the appearance of the area - most of the buildings burned down. Before the fire, Podil was the most densely populated area of the city - 2068 houses out of 3672 residential buildings in Kiev. After the fire, Podil was re-planned and restoration began. New streets were laid, which still exist, the Gostiny Dvor, the Contract House, the new building of the Kiev Academy and other buildings were erected. In the 1960s and 70s, a lot of work was done to identify and study the historical past of Podil, and more than 3 thousand structures were examined. On Podil - 226 monuments of historical value, 431 ensemble buildings with signs of an architectural style, 99 memorial buildings. In Soviet times, historians and archaeologists excavated on Podil, examined about 3,000 houses and outbuildings. In the 1960-1970s, even planned to create a conservation area. In 1987, the historical and architectural reserve “Ancient Kiev” was finally established on Podil, and in 2001 it was added to the list of monuments of national importance. Modernity… On Podil life is in full swing at any time of the day. In the afternoon, people of Kiev come here to work, in the evening - to walk along the old streets, have a drink in small bars, and watch alternative theater performances. In addition to numerous museums, private galleries and theaters on Podil showrooms of Ukrainian designers, vintage shops, boutiques and designer stores are concentrated. The area is famous for a large number of establishments of various formats - from democratic youth pubs to high-level restaurants. On the street of Peter Sagaidachnogo there are popular network establishments, and on the other side of Kontraktova Square there are unique bars, cafes and pastry shops, for the sake of which people from all over the city come to Podil. On weekends, the main tourist street of Kiev - St. Andrew's Descent - turns into a fair with souvenir shops, paintings and hand-made products. Podil has a large number of historical and architectural monuments, so there are always many tourists on the main streets. But in the depths of the neighborhood is quite quiet. Also Podil has many temples. Each church has a long history and its own legends. From St. Andrew's descent, you can climb to the observation deck overlooking Podil and the left bank. On Vozdvizhenskaya street parallel to Andreevsky Descent, picnics and garage sales are organized. In the warm season, River Station operates on Postal Square, from where excursion ships depart. On the new embankment Kievans of all ages relax. Next to Postal Square is the Pedestrian Bridge that leads to Trukhanov Island, and the metro "Postal Square" - the old Kiev funicular - one of the main city attractions. On Upper Val is the oldest market in Kiev - Zhitniy. It sells clothes, shoes, household goods and groceries. Agricultural fairs take place from time to time. There are several squares in the microdistrict. One of them - “Samosad” - was created by local residents on their own: planted a public garden on Spasskaya Street, made street furniture. Podil is a prestigious central district, today it is one of the safest areas of Kiev, in which the development of tsarist times predominates. Apartments in such houses are expensive and often require additional investments in reconstruction and repair. In the metro area "Tarasa Shevchenko" there are stalinkas - less expensive and more comfortable housing. Just right now, you, dear guest, are here!) You can leave your car at night near the house. In walking distance is the metro station Taras Shevchenko (7 minutes), to the metro station Kontraktova Square (10 minutes). Uber shuttle buses run in the neighboring streets, and there are public transport stops near the house.
