This self-catering cottage has a bedroom, kitchen and attached bathroom. With exposed brick walls, antique wooden furniture, and hand-painted tiles, Ivy Cottage is delightfully shabby chic. Rustic and yet luxurious, the decor reflects local tribal culture and the animals of the Nilgiris. An entire wall of floor-to-ceiling windows looks out on a private patio, gardens, and a stunning view of the Nilgiris mountains. Breakfast is included. Away from the hustle and bustle of Ooty town, Ivy Cottage is a serene and peaceful retreat, overlooking tea estates, wild forest and mountain ridges. Two other houses, Stumpfields and Bilberry share the 1.5 acre property. Bilberry Cottage is directly above Ivy Cottage. We have staff here in the day and a night watchman as well. Security cameras are used in multiple locations. We have beautifully equipped kitchens so you can cook your own lunch and snacks, and we provide a breakfast buffet at 9 am. The breakfast buffet is located in the main house, Stumpfields, just next to Ivy Cottage. Please feel free to eat in the dining room at the main house, OR take your food back to your own cottage! In the evenings, if you wish to socialize, please gather in the living room of the main house and enjoy a warm fire in the hearth. We do not provide lunch or dinner. You may order food to be delivered to your cottage from Zwiggy and Zomato. The nearest good restaurant is Highland Hotel 1.5 km away. We do not provide room service. We urge only resilient, nature loving, independent, resourceful, adventuresome people to book a holiday here. Its a wild and steep terrain, and at night you will not hear the noise of traffic, but rather the sound of wind in the trees, owls in the dark, rain on the roofs, and bird and animal calls. While the evenings may have firelight, candles and electricity, once the lights are out, will be pitch dark all around. When skies are clear the stars and moon are perhaps the most beautiful you will ever see. It's something about being in the mountains 8,000 ft high, with no pollution covering the atmosphere. Other times of the year, especially in the monsoon, it's just incredibly dark. The mountains of Ooty are also very cool year-round, especially at night. While the indoors are warm and cozy, mountain air outside is brisk! Come here ready to unplug from emails and the internet, TV's and movies, and try curling up by the oil heater with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book. Let your body and mind re-set and recharge as you decompress and let the nature around you remind you there is a different way to live. A little iron gate invites a short walk into national reserve forest surrounding the Stumpfield property. A private flight of stone steps leads down to the orchard of fruit trees and herb garden. Feel free to pick your own herbs, , or just sit back and sip some tea at the garden table. For those who want serious hiking, just ask our helpful caretaker who can guide you or point you in the right direction. Guest access Our driveway is 300 meters long and 8 feet wide! The steepest parts are paved with concrete pavers, and the rest is a dirt track lined with grass. You need to be a fairly competent driver to navigate our long and steep drive! If you aren't confident, you can park on the road and walk in. We will not pick up guests at the road and bring them up to the house. Guests are welcome to walk through the gardens and explore the property. The lawns and gardens are shared spaces. The outdoor picnic table is reserved for Stumpfields guests only. Feel free to play games or exercise out on the lawns. Hiking trails through forest and tea estates crisscross the land around Bilberry Cottage. A short walk through the forest brings you to a lovely playground for children at a government tea estate called the Tea Park. This is a new government tourist spot, and as yet is not too crowded or well known. A great place for the view, park benches and a 1 kilometer concrete path loop for hiking. Other things to note 1. Most people are surprised at how cold Ooty is! We have equipped Ivy Cottage with a radiator oil heater on wheels so you can move it easily around the cottage where you need it most. It really warms up the space in a short amount of time and makes it nice and cozy on even the coldest nights. There is a feather duvet on the bed as well. A 30 lt hot water geyser heats water both for the bath and the kitchen tap. 2. We recently had the 300 meter drive paved in all the steepest parts. You can drive up to the cottage and unload your things, but please park down by the horse barn. 3. If you need help with your things, and arrive between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm then our house help can assist you! 4. This property is not suitable for people who have trouble walking on uneven surfaces, or climbing stairs. It is not the ideal location for elderly folks, unless they are very fit and energetic. While all the lawns, gardens and courtyards are terraced level ground, the whole property is on a 45 degree slope, so almost everything is either up or down with plenty of stairs leading to the different levels! 5. Wild bison and other animals frequent the area around the cottage outside of the boundaries of Stumpfields. If you are lucky you may get to see one or even a whole herd. 6. We have 1 dog. Please remember our dog is not tied up and is allowed to roam around the property freely. He is super friendly! If you are afraid of dogs, this may not be the right place for you to spend your vacation. 6. We do have a bed for drivers with bathroom. Cost is Rs.500 per night. 7. Ivy Cottage is perfect for two adults. A child can be accommodated on a mattress on the floor if necessary.
