The 1811 Cottage is as unique as the 120 acre farm it sits on with it's wide heart pine plank walls, ceilings, floors, and the duel fireplaces. This historic settler's home features a living room, master bedroom on the main floor, and a huge sleeping loft, making it comfortable and cozy for one to six guests. Modern additions include a large bathroom with claw foot tub and shower and a nicely equipped, yet tiny kitchenette. The front porch is a great spot for that early morning cup of coffee! The cottage is a history lovers dream ! It can be rented along with the Kitchen House, sleeping up to 8 guests. Think about an early Little House on the Prairie. The pristine original interior is just as it was when a young planter named Nobel McCowan moved his family here in 1811. At that time, Morgan County was on the Western frontier of America and the McCowan's closest neighbors were likely the indigenous native peoples who had lived here for centuries. The two room English Cottage, very typical of European settlers, is nicely embellished with beaded wall planks and beams, as well as fancy moldings throughout. Although I haven't done much research on the family, I consider the cottage to be the settler's "starter home". I can just hear his wife saying " if you move me out to that savage land, then you must build me a fine home with all the features my mother's has". She would have probably had to cook for the first few year's in one of the fireplaces here, then as time and money allowed a separated kitchen house would be added in the back. By 1870 the cottage would become the home of the McRee family, who reported on that year's census to have had 12 children! Today's guests that expect all the amenities of a new, modern home, might not be a good fit! We host many families and groups that return year after year, but know the second bedroom is an upper level sleeping loft. The doorless loft is accessed by the very steep steps so we do not recommend it for the elderly, small children, or anyone with mobility issues. The kitchenette is not set up for cooking meals, but works for heating prepared foods and beverage service. The entire cottage is accessible to you. There are no shared spaces indoors, only the back breezeway and yard is shared by a separate cottage. The trails and pond are opened to all, but please stick to the marked trails that are on the map you will be given upon arrival. The pond is a great spot to just relax, or enjoy some catch and release fishing! I work and live in Atlanta during the week , but my parents are just minutes away. There are also people that help me around the farm that also help guests out that need assistance. We are about 7 miles to the nearest town, but there are a few neighbors in view on the farm. Rutledge is the nearest town with restaurants, stores, gas stations and liquor store. Madison is only about 10 miles away and has more options to choose from and more night life and culture. A car is a must when visiting the farm. There is no public transportation in our area. The ride sharing apps do not really work way out here as well. Nearest rental car agency is in Madison Ga, about 12 miles away. Rent the entire farm for events! We are a licensed event facility and offer the farm for weddings, family reunions, and other outdoor events. We have a wonderful covered stage pavilion and picnic area as well as a barn and can handle up to 150 guests for a dinner or ceremony.
