40m to Mawella Beach - Restored Fishermans Cottage
Description
Welcome to our rustic, chic beach house set footsteps away from one of Sri Lanka's most secluded and unspoilt beaches. This is a simple yet comfortable retreat to relax, connect with nature and experience life on an authentic working fisherman's beach. It's also a fantastic base for wider explorations of Sri Lanka; from shopping in beautiful Galle fort to bird watching, safaris, turtle or whale watching, getting into the surf scene at Hiriketiya or blissing out with an ayurvedic massage. The space The house has one good sized bedroom with a queen sized four poster bed that opens out to a beautiful seating area and connects to the outdoor bathroom with shower and an enormous tub. There's also an indoor bathroom with shower, toilet and his and hers sinks. We have chosen not to install air conditioning as we prefer a more natural feel and find the house to be very cool from it's design. There are ceiling fans throughout however which we find ample. To the other side of the large hallway, which has a very comfortable lounging chair and a desk, is a well equipped kitchen (although please note there is no oven, just a powerful 2 ring gas hob), a living space with 2 handmade teak daybeds and an indoor dining table. There is also a separate room with daybed that we use for reading and general chilling out. There is a fully enclosed garden to the front with 2 sunloungers and a rustic 'ambalama' for outdoor dining. While the house was designed for a couple and has only one bedroom, it is a very large space and the reading room and living space daybeds can be set up for sleeping and so may suit families. Please do send a message if interested in this option and we can check it will be suitable. There is wifi, a safety deposit box, hairdryer, yoga mats, snorkelling equipment, body board and bluetooth speaker for guests to enjoy using. A list of recommended restaurants, places and activities will be sent prior to arrival and is also available in the house. Guest access Guests will have private access to the property and its garden, with their own private access to enter the property. Other things to note Please be advised that this property is closely situated next to our adjacent building. While each space maintains its privacy with restricted access between them, guests may occasionally hear sounds from neighboring accommodations. We encourage guests to embrace this as a neighborly atmosphere, ensuring a tranquil and inclusive experience for all. This is a comfortable yet rustic feeling place in a rural, natural and still developing location. Please be advised that the property is closely situated both next to our adjacent building and also the family home of our local neighbours. While it is generally an extremely peaceful place; guests may occasionally hear sounds from any neighbouring guests and also the local family who do tend to start their day early; with household noises and occasionally with music which is common in coastal communities. There are also the sounds of local life (the wildlife, waves, occasional chanting from the temple, fishermen heading to/returning from the sea, local dogs). For us, this all forms part of the charm and authenticity of the location, but we like to ensure guests are fully informed. It's important to also be aware and comfortable that our design is very open and there is an abundance of wildlife all around (monkeys, peacocks, monitor lizards, cats but also geckos, frogs, beetles and other bugs!) The design of the house provides natural ventilation along with plentiful fans, and so there is no air conditioning by choice nor TV. It’s also good to know that there can sometimes be water and electricity outages. These usually happen during the daytime and so aren’t too much of an inconvenience, but we do ask for a little patience while services are restored.
