Description

Our island rests in Sawyer Harbor surrounded by Potawatomi State Park and Idlewild Peninsula. This is a nature lovers haven. It is the perfect place for those that are looking for a quiet, peaceful getaway and up for a bit of adventure. The wooded island is seven acres and home to two cottages—Sunrise (facing Potawatomi, “the emerald wall” as Grandpa Paul fondly named the view) and Sunset (overlooking the Idlewild Peninsula). The cottages are connected by a well traveled path and a short walk. The space Sunrise and Sunset are both cozy cottages with their own personality and charm. Each has an electric range, refrigerator, microwave, furnished kitchen, charcoal grill and shower. The cottages each have a dock to moore a boat. There are public boat launches at Potawatomi State Park and on the Idlewild Peninsula. If you don't plan to bring your own boat, pontoon or boat transport will be provided late May through early October depending on the weather. There are canoes and a rowboat for trips to and from the mainland during your stay as well as kayaks and SUP (stand up paddle) boards for enjoying Sawyer Harbor. The waters of Sturgeon Bay and Green Bay meet at Idlewild Peninsula and are home to world class fishing. Potawatomi State Park is an 1100 acre woodland filled with hiking, biking and skiing trails, a campground and small store. The view from the cliffs is a good way to orient yourself as you can see the entire harbor. We love this place - this is home for us. Our family has a tiny cottage on the Idlewild Peninsula. We grew up, fell in love, got engaged and were married (at Sherwood Point Lighthouse) on this peninsula. Let’s set appropriate expectations. Again, the island is still newish to us. We expect hiccups. We anticipate needing to problem solve issues that may arise and figuring out quirks with you - our easy going, outdoor loving and adventure minded guests. There are so many wonderful places to stay in Door County. Most are probably more convenient and easier altogether than the island. Other lodging options will likely have AC, super comfortable beds, TVs with cable, easy parking, and a concierge. Not us. We're a couple of young professionals that live an hour away and will be occasionally relying on our parents (who are pretty awesome) to help us transport guests as needed to and from the island, help clean up the cottages in between guests and respond to *big* problems that may arise. We are slowly fixing up the cabins as we are able. There are almost certainly going to be spiders and mosquitoes. The cabins are rustic - they're sweet, charming and functional - but they're old. The doors don't close tightly, the **furniture is worn, and the floors show years of traffic. The mattresses are probably past due to be replaced; we're not there yet. If you're still reading you are probably, like us, willing to look past the imperfections and looking forward to the magic of staying on an island with nature surrounding you and falling asleep to water lapping the shore. ** Some furniture has been replaced. Other things to note Parking is available at Potawatomi State Park (state park sticker required).
