Being “on the beach” certainly beats being “near the beach” So welcome to Okaloosa Island and many little treasures here at Colorful Paradise 🏖️ Okaloosa County has twenty-four miles of sugarwhite sandy beaches. The sand is so white and the sparkling waters become as clear as a swimming pool, due to beautiful quartz crystal, traveling and settling from the Appalachians. The sparkling sand, reflects the sunlight, creating that emerald-green hue on the water. Known for pristine white beaches, clear turquoise waters, and a laid-back vibe, Okaloosa Island has welcomed visitors for years. It's no wonder, given the beautiful weather, friendly locals, and coastal charm found throughout the community. The county's name comes from a Muskogee Indian phrase meaning "Black Water", which refers to the area's many lakes and bayous that are darkened by tannin from nearby. For centuries, Native American tribes inhabited the land now known as Fort Walton Beach. Early settlers arrived in the area around 1821 and the landscape was used as a strategic protection point during the Civil War which saw the establishment of Camp Walton. Okaloosa Island is an area on Santa Rosa Island, Florida, United States. An 875-acre (354 ha) parcel of Santa Rosa Island with 3 miles (4.8 km) of Gulf frontage was conveyed to Okaloosa County on July 8, 1950, in an informal ceremony at the county courthouse in Crestview.
