The county's name comes from a Muskogee Indian phrase meaning "Black Water", which refers to the area's many lakes and bayous that are darkened by tannin from nearby. For centuries, Native American tribes inhabited the land now known as Fort Walton Beach. Early settlers arrived in the area around 1821 and the landscape was used as a strategic protection point during the Civil War which saw the establishment of Camp Walton.
